tbourner
Anyone watch Eastenders? Do Muslims really hate gays and beat them up all the time? Or is it just the 'sin' of being gay and not the 'sinner' that's at fault (as mentioned by that bloke in the programme)? Or something. IBTL. tbourner
That's all they wanted to know I guess, thanks imi. Honestly guys, what's the f***** point of these threads? I'm interested maybe? I want to know why Eastenders think it's a good idea to show things like that, surely it's promoting yet MORE hatred towards the Muslim community? I was hoping somebody would give some text from the book that shows what might be taken as man not being with man or whatever? I believe the bible actually says something along similar lines? I'm not trying to start a war or anything, just wanted to get the Islamic board members' opinions on the whole thing.

bigbloodyturbo
Don't think it has much to do with the guy being muslim, more the fact that his daughter got messed about by some chap who ended up being gay, result being the guy gets his head kicked in. Would most likely happen in any religeon.

OK maybe the beating up was the protective father, but the whole gaymuslim thing I don't get. Disowning your child because he's gay? Actually I guess that probably happens to people whether they're Muslim or not!! I just get the impression Eastenders are opening a can of worms (like I just have apparently). bigbloodyturbo
Eastenders seems to try and offend people with their storylines on purpose anyway, religeon, sexuality, racism I even think there was a bit where some lass shagged her boyfriends dad. It gets them the cover of the tv times so they're happy I guess.
tbourner
I didn't expect it to go south so quick! The 'IBTL' was meant to be a joke cos of the title. I was hoping it would come across as a dig at the producers of the show, instead it seems I've made myself look like a racist homophobic Muslim hating Nazi. Again. Not necessarily, some will see the point you describe, but not everyone will have the same view and hence it hasn't panned out as you perhaps expected. As it's such a charged subject why not make your point clear [preferably from the start!] and remove that possibility.

Septic
Sigh.... let me deal with the issue maturely before the BNP lot come out: Homosexuality is not acceptable in Islam. No we don't go around beating gays up. However, you cannot be a true muslim and practising gay at the same time. The actual act sexual intercourse between men is forbidden as opposed to homosexuality. "We also sent Lut : He said to his people : "Do ye commit lewdness such as no people in creation (ever) committed before you? For ye practice your lusts on men in preference to women: ye are indeed a people transgressing beyond bounds." Qur'an 7:80-81 There's nothing in the Qur'an that stipulates the punishment of homosexuals but certain Hadiths (sayings of the Prophet) have a very strict punishment on it- imprisonment, exile and even a death penalty. Yeah it does seem a bit harsh in today's society but the Hadiths aren't meant to be timeless (they might not even be authentic).

IMI you could just reply like the above to be honest. I dont know much about the muslim culture or religion and where i live isnt very mixed race. Whenever im in our other office and talking to the guys there I always ask them these type of questions about their religion some people are just interested to know. I may not have the same beliefs but on stuff like this...it doesnt mean either religion is wrong, its important you are just true to your faith and belief (if religious)
Septic
Cheers Whitey. Its important to learn about other cultures. I can understand Imi's frustrations because we mussies seem to be in the firing line a lot post 9/11 (literally and figuratively).
AndrewOW
I must say I do agree with WSB2's comments, as if we just had a straight answer, then nothing would get out of hand so quickly. We are on this forum to learn about our cars, as well about other people and their backgrounds. No one will want to kill you for just expressing yourself in a sensible way, as most of us aren't complete bigots, just ill educated perhaps. Have you seen the show? I felt a bit cringy watching it I could see the gay community writing in to complain or something. Maybe Termi's right I need to wait till the storyline ends. There's a hint that the parents are both just worried about their son rather than being 'disgraced' so maybe it'll go that way.
