Supra on 95-E10 fuel

I found this on another forum - it is the best explanation I've seen about E10:

"It's basically normal petrol with an extra dose of Ethanol (most unleaded's had a small dose of ethanol in it for quite a while now - up to 5%). The trouble is that Ethanol's not very friendly to lots of rubber, aluminium, plastic and brass parts, and it's hygroscopic (atttracts water from the atmosphere), which means it can also accelerate corrosion in steel pipes. The biggest problem in older cars is the fuel hoses breaking down, especially if they're the originals on a classic, for example - this already happens with unleaded fuel anyway, but the extra ethanol won't help. Ethanol's also got less energy per litre, so you need more of it, so your fuel system needs to be optimised to suit, which isn't always possible. In practice most cars will run fine with 10-15% Ethanol, and wouldn't have corrosion/reliability issues even if run on 100% Ethanol, but If the E10 is significantly cheaper than 'normal' 95 or 98 it's worth researching the particular brand at your local station, because the E10 label means it contains UP TO 10% Ethanol. In practice most of it's still way below that. As for mowers and strimmers, I think you're better off with 'normal' 98 if you can get it, ideally with an additive. 4-stroke moiwer engines and the like are pretty old tech, and 2-stroke carbs tend to contain lots of little brass jets etc. Garden machinery also tends to get left all winter with old fuel in, which is when the corrosion can set in - I've been trying to get in the habit of running everything dry when I know it's not being used for a few months. Thread revival!!

Further to this artical http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyId=24900

Does anyone know if the 2ZJ engines will be ok on E10 for the future?

The Supra is not listed as being effected but the list does not go back past 1998.

I know that production ended in 2002 but does anyone know if the rubbers, seals etc were changed between the newer and older 2JZ engines?

There is an Aussie site that goes through the car manufacturers models and E10 compatibility and with regard to the Supra they mention anything post May 1993 is compatible.

Super unleaded is not affected so anyone running the expensive stuff will carry on as today. Apparently, those running with 95 fuel may benefit from a tune up to cater for a leaner burn with E10 fuel. Seeing a lot of us only do a few hundred miles a year moving to the Super stuff shouldn't be a major financial hardship.
