Lude
just wondering, do you have reverse with them? do they have clutches aswel? i can imagine they cost as much as a car as the getrag is quite a pricey number
jevansio
Yes they have reverse, they have a clutch (although not operated by the driver in the usual fashion - operated automatically by the SMG system everytime it wants to change gear) EDIT just realised you prolly didn't mean the sequential manual gearbox like the BMW SMG system? Lude
no dont mean flappy pedal on the steering wheel ones, mean the boxes where you just pull the gearstick forward & back to change gear

Stephen G
have seen mk2 ecorts rally cars with sequential race boxes and all had reverse just had a small lever on the shifter to pull or lift when you had downshifted to first and stopped to then allow you to engage reverse
Chris Wilson
Yes, most have a reverse as both rally and circuit race cars, for they are intended, have to have a reverse, although most cite reverse as a manoeuvring gear only, to be used gently. I fitted a Swedish Tractive sequential box to my RWD Skyline and it works superbly. Any of the proper race sequentials are going to be costly, but they hold a good resale value and if you use the car on track they are worth lap time. I wrote a write up on adapting one to fit an RB26 engine, doing the same on a 2JZ-GTE would follow very similar lines. I may be doing one for a customer this summer, using the bellhousing from a manual Soarer / MKIII 1JZ Supra. Funnily enough I am just finished machining and fitting an adaptor to fit a slightly bigger bore AP Racing clutch master cylinder on my car, as I wasn't 100% happy about pedal travel to release the triple plate clutch. It's fine now. Write up is at: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=180791&highlight=tractive
Swampy442
On small kit cars and the like with bike engines and boxes they have an electric reverse gear. Chris, I know its a moot point on racing cars but how much extra stress do sequential gear changes put on the rest of the transmission? Chris Wilson
Very little, if any, why should they? The drive train knows and feels nothing about the gear selection method. Shock loads are governed by clutch slip, presence or lack of damped clutch plate hubs, solid or rubber engine and gearbox mountings, and diff mountings, and compliance or lack of in the prop shaft joints / couplings. Swampy442
I meant the shock loadings mate, thanks for the reply
Nic
Ikeya Formula do sequential shifter kits for a lot of different Japanese car models, unfortunately not the Supra. How difficult would it be to adapt say an R33 kit for the Supra Chris? http://www.ikeya-f.co.jp/en/product_notice/sequen_shifter.html
Chris Wilson
I have yet to see an H pattern to sequential shifter kit that works. I had a Skyline in with the Ikeya thing on it, and it was basically a joke. It jammed, jumped and was generally a POS to be frank.
