HMRC tax refund scam emails

Got sent this this morning:

Very well presented except for the URL pointing a totally naff website and not having any personalised address in the 'To' field of the email.

 

Very sneaky and cleverly timed with so many people currently in dispute over their tax codes at this time of year. Be vigilant !

This has been going on since January roughly. Sent an email out to all my clients and was surprised at the number of people that had received this.

just deleted one the other day , i get various bank ones all the time .

would there be a problem if you answered any of these or is it ok to tell them to fxxx off

I had one of those - HMRC will send you a cheque anyway. Like banks, they never get in touch via email.

But why would you get an email about a tax refund anyway? It's all postal.

I wouldn't recommend replying back, they will get a read receipt anyway once you have read the e-mail which will confirm the mailbox is live & can be sold off to junk mailers hence why you notice more junk e-mail getting to you after you read one junk e-mail. I have to say that it was a very clever e-mail & looks pretty good & I bet a lot of people have clicked on that link.
