Nurburg Ring Trip Cost

Sure it's 'the nurburgring', but there's plenty of closed tracks close to home. 21 hours of driving there and back doesn't appeal either.

Matt, you need to sit down with someone who's been and let them explain how wrong you are :)

The car park is like the greatest car show ever, the roads around the track are close to perfection and the track itself is a test track that puts the car and driver under every type of challenge you could imagine.

It's a mecca for petrolheads.

Matt's not a driver though, no offence Matt. I can understand his lack of enthusiasm, the 'Ring isn't going to be for everyone and the drive of there and back is soul-destroyingly boring, it's true.

The drive to and from isn't that bad. There's some lovely scenery, and the autobahn stretches are fun.

You could easily drive it in a day. I drove from York to Bruges in a day, and could have happily gone the rest of the way if i'd wanted to. ( a prior engagement in Amsterdam prevented that)

The place is amazing. It's hard to understand without going.

Even driving steady, it's like being on a rollercoaster in the comfort of your own car. Pushing it a bit is challenging, and will test the limits of your driving and your car.

Word of warning, don't try and keep up with the locals...

As for costs, in 2006 I drove;

York -portsmouth/calais - Bruges - Amsterdam - Koln (Cologne) - Nurburgring (2 days) - Paris - Calais/Portsmouth - York.

There were 2 of us, and we spent just under £3k between us, including all fuel, ring laps, accomodation, ferries etc for 11 days.

:D I love the drive there and back actually, but I suppose that's because I'm a bit of a rascal on trips like these.

When I first started going to the 'ring it used to be short quick breaks of only 3 or 4 days....I quickly realised the best way to do it is to spend a minimum of 5 days in the area.

Make a 'holiday' of it and visit the local area.

The drive over there and back is part of the fun, epsecially if you go over in a group. The German roads are a treat to drive on, and if you were to travel around and visit attrractions/places the area and use the 'A' roads, it is a pleasure just to, well...'drive'.

When you make the trip more into a holiday like this then your costs make more sense.

I am treating myself and the girlfriend this year....we're going over to the 'ring on 19th May for a few days and then spending 3.5 weeks in Europe just travelling around. Taking in Baveria, Salzburg, Lake Garda, Monaco, Lake Bodensee then back up to the 'ring for a final quick visit before heading back home. :) :) :)

Steve,

booked to go back in September if you fancy the trip...... the Aristo will be more fun than the "Passat" was last year...

Roll on September I say :p

When are you going over in September Tom? I will be there for the first week of October, but may be lengthening that to include the last week of September too. :)

None taken, but that's only because of the car I drive. I wouldn't risk pushing it to its limits, and that would be a shame as I would want to if I was at the ring. I also wouldn't want to crash the car that has taken 2 years to build and I wouldn't want to get stuck in Germany.

The idea of the car park sounds a dream though.

I quess If I'm going to go then I need practice on a 'closer to home' track first.

And yes, I'd put going away for a 2 week break to an exotic higher than the ring for sure. :)
