Chris Wilson
Finalllly broadband has come out to us here in the sticks. BT are due to fix it all up next week. Now years ago, at the old house, I was on a Cable and Wirleless cable modem trial, that was supposed to last 4 weeks, but lasted over a year. I ran my own web and ftp servers. the web server software was dead easy to set up and use (it must have beenm even I managed it...), and i think its name began with an X. Anyone know what it might have been, or can recommend a REALLY simple web server software, and ftp server software please? I would also like to be able to look at still photos from a security camera at home, on my moble phone, is this possible with broadband? Thanks. Pete
Serv-U is very good FTP Server software. I use Bulletproof as an FTP client. Both about 50 dollars I think. Not sure why you'd want to run your own web server as you'll only have 256k upload speed regardless of your download speed - that's a drawback with ADSL. Your cable modem would've been quicker upload speed. Web servers are mainly either Apache or IIS. I can't remember the one begining with X - but I'm not sure it's around any more. Pete
Some cameras come with software which allows them to save images etc to files which your webserver could then host.
imi
you can watch live video from your webcam on broadband no problem. I have two cameras to keep an eye on the property....and obviously the sup. if you go with ZEN then you get 1GB of webspace ,better host the website there, if you want to host your own for personal use (not that my traffic transfer) then 256K upload is adequate. Pete
What cameras running what software?
imi
They are ORITE IP Cameras (£40 for each) and the software comes with the camera. This is a cheap solution, but does the job. If you want a quality camera then look at AXIS.
Aerotop Dave
I would also like to be able to look at still photos from a security camera at home, on my moble phone, is this possible with broadband? My cheapy phone can receive email, and my cheapy webcam came with movement activated software - you set the area of the pic that you want to keep an eye on, and when it detects movement in that area it emails a snapshot to you. I've never had cause to use it, I just mucked around with it one day when I kept an eye on my cat in my flat for fun The point being however that you should be able to do this with relatively cheap bits. Pete
We use Axis cameras here internally. Good but £££'s
