Supragal
OK, am I right in saying that you ARE allowed to drive a car that has no MOT or Tax on the road PROVIDED you are on the way to or from a pre-arrange MOT test OR to get necessary work done for the MOT provided the car is roadworthy? letmeshowyou
Yes on the first part. Not heard that about the second part tho...
Aerotop Dave
Yes if you are on your way to getting the pre-arranged MOT, not sure about the 'on my way to get some work done to pass the MOT' bit though (personally I would have thought not as technically you're uninsured, but I could be wrong) DVLA website...? Whitesupraboy2
Rosie, i take it u r thinking back to a thread a while ago that Jake mentioned it in. No you cant drive it to somewhere to have work done. If you take it to have a MOT and it fails...then and only then can you drive it to the place to have the work done. ill double check in bit after match but im sure that right ..sorry
Supragal
But if you know it's going to fail what's the point in putting it in for a test? God damn, this is the only way round my current dilema!!
Supragal
http://www.motcentrefinder.co.uk/nav/info_pages/driving_the_law.html damn, that does sound like you have to have failed one first?! What the Hell is the point in that?!
SimonB
Can't you just get the work done at a place that does MOTs? Then you're driving the car to the MOT that just happens to be at the same place that's doing the work if you see what I mean.
Supragal
It's the alarm that needs fitting so it needs to go to Matt!
Aerotop Dave
But that can wait until after the MOT surely? Just lock the doors and take something off the engine to stop it going anywhere...?
Supragal
You're forgetting that some dozy bint 2 years ago thought it would be a good idea to have it delocked and dehandled. Therefore I can't open the door without it being done first and won't pass the MOT because there won't be a mechanical entry method.
Aerotop Dave
Oh. What about fluttering your eyelashes and getting Matt to come to you...?
Supragal
Crossed my mind, I've pm'd him for ideas of how we can get round it but it's 2 good days of work to get it fitted and working... so I don't think any amount of fluttering will do it! Originally I was gonna have it done before it left the bodyshop but the company up there want £400 odd quid more **** off!!!!! Plus I don't trust anyone anymore, Matts the exception to that when it comes to alarms etc!
Pete
Just have a prearranged date and time and you should be ok. Check with YOUR insurance company though if you're not sure.
Supragal
If I get pulled and have to declare docs though... that the worry. It's a fair way from me to Matt. I was thinking about getting the MOT done in that area then at least the drive back will be ok! But if it's got to fail first then it'll have to fail here, be driven there and then back here for a re-test
Whitesupraboy2
i bet ur only insured with the cat 1 alarm on the car anyway. so if you get pulled on way down there MOT least of your worries but on serious note, what u say above sounds best idea rosie, just imagine if they passed it
Supragal
I wouldn't be insured for theft without an alarm, it wouldn't invalidate the driving bit. Yeah, just a PITA that's all *sigh*

SteveR
Rosie, you CAN take it to a place of repair; "MOT. Cars and motorcycles MUST normally pass an MOT test three years from the date of the first registration and every year after that. You MUST NOT drive a vehicle without an MOT certificate, when it should have one. Driving an unroadworthy vehicle may invalidate your insurance. Exceptionally, you may drive to a pre-arranged test appointment or to a garage for repairs required for the test." from; http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/28.htm#
Jake
Book it in for an MoT at a garage near Matt. Drive it down there two or three days before the MoT but take it to Matt's place instead. If you get stopped on your way say you're taking it to the MoT station for the pre-booked MoT. There's nothing in the law that says you can only drive it to the station on the day of the test. Two or three days is a reasonable amount of time prior to the actual MoT
Rob
How are you going to pass next years test once the car is de-handled?
Jake
Rob, The car is already dehandled, she just needs a method of locking/unlocking/opening the doors and that's what Matt is going to do for her.
GeordieSteve
Yes on both parts. I have it in writing from the DVLA. You must however be going directly there and back
