stu306
OK went to change the pads today and the near side caliper is leaking at the piston. Quick question, will the refurb kit sort this or do I need to replace the caliper?
merckx
Impossible to say until you've removed the pistons and had a look at the condition of the bores.
Dnk
Looks like you'll possibly need 2 new pistons and the seal kit, the bores usually clean up okay and there a clearance fit on the pistons so not so critical as the pistons themselves. Pop out all 4 pistons and the inner seals and clean the caliper bores and pistons with brake cleaner then you should see easily whats required. Ian C
Christ and I thought mine needed doing because the rubber seal had perished a bit on one fold There isn't any rubber seal left there! How did it ever get that bad?
Dnk
Christ and I thought mine needed doing because the rubber seal had perished a bit on one fold There isn't any rubber seal left there! How did it ever get that bad? Neglect. Their not in a very nice environment and do pretty well lasting as long as they do. Once they split or get a hole in then its only a matter of time before they usually sieze rather than start leaking. The pistons soon suffer pitting from corrosion and are usually scrap adding to the cost of the refurb by approx £15 per piston. Much more sence to change them before they get anywhere near as bad as the picture above.
Chris Wilson
I'd bin them if they were mine, but if you are lucky new pistons, new seals and new dust seals and a thorough clean and hone out may save them. Need to see them stripped. To hone them them properly you need to split them. I keep the seals that go between the caliper halves, that must be replaced, and that Toyot do not list or sell.
