Intake valve clearances

Hi guys, I wouldn't mind your help again.

1st time I measured the clearance I was using feeler gauges that go in 0.15, 0.20, 0.25mm etc. As I was only going off the stock clearances & 0.15 slid in & 0.20 didn't I assumed that the clearance was OK.

In light of this & Steve's thread & went and bought some gauges that measure 0.01 mm increments. I got the following results for the intake cam (12 values reading from cyl 1 to 6)

0.18

0.18

0.16

0.18

0.18

0.16

0.17

0.16

0.16

0.16

0.16

0.16

So I phoned up a local engineering place and asked if it was possible to take 0.02 to 0.04 mm off a set of shims. He looked (obviously over the phone) at me as if I were stupid, he said there's no way they could machine a thou of an inch off.

So what do I do, do I live with the fact they are a hundreth of a mill off HKS specs, or is there something else I can do. Shims from Toyota go up in 0.05mm increments so if I were to replace the 0.16 ones I'd be going upto a gap of 0.21mm

Doesn't sound like a very good engineering company if they can't surface grind 0.02 - 0.04 off your shims. Unless they haven't got a surface grinder ?

Easy peasy apprentice stuff in my book :)
