jevansio
When I fitted my 264 intake cam ever one of the intake valve clearances was 0.15mm (the exact miniumum Toyota recommend). Do you think I should buy a full set of shims to get it upto 0.20mm (the centre of their clearance range)?
hodge
Personally if its in tollerence then its correct and id leave it alone Jay.
jevansio
Personally if its in tollerence then its correct and id leave it alone Jay. Reason I ask is after a very heated run yesterday sometime it felt flat, I'm trying to understand why & this was one thing that popped into my head. The other is a missfire, although it seemed to be midrange (ie just after shifting into 4th approx 5k rpm) where it felt flat, I've never had a missfire there before (although in hindsight it does fit the missfire criteria), I've always had high rpm high boost misses (ie 7k rpm). hodge
When Toyota do them the stock cams wont all be at mid size thats why they give you a tollerence. Aslong as its definately within the + and - you cant go wrong Jay.

Chris Wilson
You could just get them all surface ground thinner if it bugs you? I would probably leave it as is for a road engine.

Steve
I thought HKS 264 cams had a Intake clearance of 0.20m +/- 0.03mm so the minimum should be 0.17mm and the max 0.23mm.
hodge
Not according the the supra manuals. As your fitting the cams into the engine I would be inclined to go with the manufactures (Toyota) spec.
Steve
http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=185358&highlight=HKS+clearances Knew i read it somewhere Edited April 25, 2010 by Steve (see edit history)
hodge
So why would the totenences be different to any other cams as there doing the same thing in the same engine.
Lee P
I thought HKS 264 cams had a Intake clearance of 0.20m +/- 0.03mm so the minimum should be 0.17mm and the max 0.23mm. This is correct for HKS cams and most aftermarket. I would get it as close to this as possible. You can buy the shims from toyota, just work out which ones you need. You only need to do the ones that need it not them all. The intake is 0.20mm and the exhaust is 0.30mm
Chris Wilson
You should always, always always set the clearances and timing for the cam from what the CAM makers recommend, never ever just use the specs the original cams ran at.
hodge
Now I didn't know this. Cheers guys, I now feel educated. Does anyone have the tollerances for 264 crower cams then.
Chris Wilson
.006 inch intakes, cold, .008 inch exhaust, cold That applies to all the none custom Crower cams for 2JZ-GTE I have the full specs somewhere.

Miguel
Aren't yours Brian Crowers cams and not Crowers Hodge ?
Chris Wilson
A *BIT* too much clearance is always better than them being tight. Setting the cam timing accurately can pay big dividends, most people just line up the dots on stock pulleys. It'll work, but production tolerances COULD be robbing you of quite a bit of performance. Doing a decent job of valve timing with the engine in the car can be a PITA.
hodge
Aren't yours Brian Crowers cams and not Crowers Hodge ? Are crower and Brian crower 2 different companies (I'm looking very stupid if they are).
Chris Wilson
I think they are different, yes. Didn't the cams come with a spec and set up sheet?

Bruce Crower mostly concentrates on US muscle, while Brian broke away to do Import applications.
