Paul
If I courier some second hand car parts from the states then do I have to pay import duty/charges on it? If the sender puts the value lower than what it actually costs (if duty applies) then does that affect the insurance should things get lost or damaged? peter richards
think so paul , i got hammered on the GBs i did from mvp wouldnt do it again tbh
Paul
Hi Peter, So this applies to Second Hand parts too ? If they charge on value then surely we can put a minimal cost on the paperwork ?
Purity14
Check the tariff code/header for what your looking to import and see what you can get away with.
Hoppy
Everything i've ever bought from the US, as stung me with import duty.A bill normally turns up within a week of recieving the goods, (with the exception of Parcelforce.Parcelforce normally hold your package and send you the bill for the duty amount.Once you pay the duty charge they then deliver your item the next day). The import duty cost is normally calculated on the declared value of the goods, including shipping, i think mate.If the sender declares a lower value, then the import duty charge should be lower. But if your goods get lost in transit, and you have to make a claim, the amount you can claim is based on the declared value of the goods. So it's a risky buisness mate. Paul
What sort of percentage are we looking at for duty, 17.5% ? It's a set of alloys, the cost will be around £1200 plus shipping. At the moment he is getting UPS and Fedex shipping costs of $325 per wheel !?!?!? This can't be right can it ?
Purity14
Yes it can !!

peter richards
maybe correct paul as mine were a few sets of dash rings which weighed bugger all ,
Paul
Well this is looking crazy, £1200 for the wheels, plus up to £850 for shipping, paypal/credit card fees 3 or 4% plus 17.5% duty on the lot !!! So, about £2130 plus duty would take them to the £2500 mark for a set of second hand wheels

Konrad
Paul, have a search about companies, which are sneding stuff by ship, not plane. I do not remember exactly how much we paid for a set from US, but it was sent by friends from US and I think that 4 massive wheels delivery was around 120 pounds all in. Oh, btw, all was sent as seperate packages and did pay duty just for one of them
supra steveo
its just luck if you get ping`ed or not i rekon, but if all they have me down for is "steve" i could be anyone, i am rarely at my mums too
SupraAyf
Paul, A pal of mine paid $2250 for a used set of alloys in the US via eBay and the UK Customs guys slammed crca $500 of import tax on the 4 wheels for entering the UK. They were described on the package as being used, with a value of $1200 for import reasons.
RobSheffield
USPS is budget and takes a while, Fedex and UPS are by plane. You always pay import tax, but in cases like Fedex they pay and invoice you. Lower value is lower import tax, but insurance will obviously be effected. Paul
Lower value is lower import tax, but insurance will obviously be effected. That's what worries me, it's too much of a risk. Konrad, my mate just suggested getting them sent by ship, worth looking into but even then i run a good chance of having to pay duty, great if it's low but have to be prepared to pay the full wack and this really is making things expensive. With shipping and duty I will be looking at 50% more than the wheels are worth at a minimum:(
