richarde7927
Ok this is a mad one ,i was dropping my son off to football this morning and i put my foot down the turbo's cut in the same as always and then a big back fire and after that car was flat (no power) so i pulled over and the pipe had come off the turbo from the boost controller , so i refitted the pipe and still no turbos im a mechanic so i have looked round to see if there are another pipes off and i cannot see anything wrong . So the question is what could be the problem there is no smoke from the exhaust , so i do not think the turbo's have blown , The car is a j spec rz tt 6 manaul k reg . Rich. imi
Either the turbos have blown OR a pipe has come lose and there is no boost - one of the two or both.
gavin.starr
is there a more definative sound of turbo spool, as when one of my pipes came off you could hear it winding away like crazy as it was just blowing out of the intercooler pipe. That would make it that there is no presurised airflow from the turbos entering the intake at all and would make it feel like there was no turbos at all. Steve
It will probably just be a intercooler hose popped off. Check all the hoses behind the bumper.
richarde7927
The turbo's sound like the are spooling , but no more than normal , see i thought the same as you blow a pipe off somewere when it over boosted when the pipe from the boost controller came off . every turbo i have ever seen when the blown the smoke pours out of the exhaust . gavin.starr
My turbo went completley, the ceramic part of the turbo completley snapped off at the shaft and there was absoulutley no smoke at all. i just lost boost altogether from my second turbo that had blown
richarde7927
Well it was an intercooler pipe off , Thank god, Had a little poo in my pants for a time there . It was the one running up to the inlet manifold half way up that pipe there is a plastic join and it was half on half off there . Rich. Scott
Happens a lot. Other popular locations are under the battery and under the drivers side headlight FWIW the car doesn't need to smoke when you kill the turbo's. I sheared my turbine wheel clean off and had nothing untoward with regards to exhaust fumes. If you kill a tubby bearing wise you will get smoke
Nic
Mine caused a cloud like an Icelandic volcano last time they blew, the engine chomping on bits of turbo can't have helped though.
gavin.starr
did yours blow on the intake side then
Scott
Did they eat a stone or something?
Nic
did yours blow on the intake side then There was just part of the shaft left when they were stripped down, the rest either went out of the exhaust or into the engine. The resultant lump of scrap engine wasn't pretty.

gavin.starr
When mine went i was waiting to pounce on any turbos that popped up on the for sale section and then some refurbed ones came along so i snapped them up, i was waiting for a while though.
