Browser Choice Update

Recommended Posts

Any body else log on today to be greated by a spam / malware looking pop up box that is actually an update from Microsoft offering to install another companies browser on your computer? How kind of them!! :D

Turns out, that it's an agreement that MS has come to with the EU over a complaint that Opera filed, stating that MS is unfairly monopolising brower choice (as it comes bundled with windows).

Any thoughts on this? Came out of the blue somewhat.

I'm suprised MS were allowed to so blatently make the update look a typical annoying pop up that you would most likely just click off 9 times out of 10!! Naughty!! :innocent:

You only just got this update, me thinks you need to run updates more often :)

I haven't changed anything since I got the computer many moons ago update wise.

Anyways, I was just interested in what peoples thoughts were, even if it's a few weeks old news.

I'd be interested to see how usage may shift. I can't really see it having much effect. For most people, IE isn't broke so they don't need to fix it.

From what I recall they did a staggerd release. Personally I think it is mindless stupidity. Windows is a Microsoft product why the hell shouldn't they bundle it with IE. It's like buying a Tom Tom and then having to decide if you want Garmin maps on it. Oh and what about Macs and Ubuntu? Macs have safari bundled with it and Ubuntu has Firefox. Have they been told to put up a selection screen?

As much as I dislike microsoft, I do agree. I use firefox anyway.

I've heard IE8 is really good :sly:

Stop stirring ;)

I have a proper dislike for IE today, sent out a company update (or should I say I fixed our WSUS server because it had not been activated), and IE8 upgrade somehow manages to break Sage, the day before payday....

Microsoft created IE. Apple created Safari. Hence they should offer an alternative.

Ubuntu is nothing to do with Firefox. It just happens to be the best browser for the masses at this time. Future versions of Ubuntu may offer Chrome. In fact, not all versions of Ubuntu use Firefox. The default install of Kubuntu uses Konqueror. Other Linux distros offer more options and you can even build your own version with whatever broswer you like.

Finally, FF, Chrome and even Safari differ from IE in that they don't have their tendrils as deeply entwined with the OS.

As a web developer I have very strong views on this and I believe that this is a good thing to do.

Internet Explorer has always been the worst browser. It's heavily frowned upon by all developers and now it's being blocked by more and more sites wishing for users to upgrade their browser or move to Firefox/Chrome.

It's just so damn difficult to make your website work just for Internet Explorer because Microsoft want to be different and not follow the standards set by W3C (world wide web consortium).

If they can just get rid of the junk they put in it to make it faster and implement a better rendering engine, nobody would have a problem with it. And it's really not that hard for an organisation like themselves.

That's a reason for avoiding those sites, right there. You can't tell people what they can and can't browse with - there's always going to be nutters and fringe users who want to use Lynx, or IE3 or some such. Whenever I find a site that "recommends" I use IE, they lose one user for life.

Well, they are mainly the sites with owners who don't really care as they get enough users with their recommended browser. I think a survey of their current users before recommendations are put in place is in good order for this.

Excellent point, they're simple as bad as the monopoly they hate if they are doing the same thing!! madness.

My simple view on this is that if you're buying a PC with windows as your choice, then why not have IE bundled in with it? At the end of the day, you need a browser to start with, so what's going to happen, you buy your new PC with windows built in, then try to get on line then get asked with browser you want first? Pointless.

If you want to change, no one is stopping you? :search:

what's next, buy a Honda get asked whether you want a Mitsubishi steering wheel?
