jk136
Had an issue with my knee for a few weeks now. Basically clashed knees at rugby training with another player and instantly it siezed up, couldnt walk etc. Even went into shock slightly (sick, lightheaded feeling). I got hit just below the kneecap (on the bit they hit when they test your reflexes.) Anyway, for a few days I was unable to bend it properly without lots of pain, but over the next 2 weeks, the pain lifted to 25% of what it was! Anyway started playing rugby again, but knowing it wasnt quite right. Think it has aggrivated it again and now I got constant pain in it, whether its rested, bent, straight etc etc. So gettign to my point...has anyone else experienced knee problem which consist of a warm feeling to touch, slight swelling, pain regardless of position and the occasional shooting pain through it? Im really hoping I havent done ligaments...but the fact the pain doesnt subside, is kind of thinking I might have done. Btw, I have booked a doctors appointment, but just hoping someone else here may have had something simular and can tell me otherwise.... Scooter
I quick cut'n'paste from a googled site......... "How is the posterior cruciate ligament injured? The incidence of injuries of the PCL is less than that of the anterior cruciate ligament. This is mainly due to the greater thickness and strength of the PCL. Nevertheless, the most common way in which the PCL is injured is by direct impact to the front of the tibia itself, usually when the knee is bent. This may occur in a front-on tackle or collision or when falling with the knee bent. The injury is commonly associated with injuries to other structures in the rear compartment of the knee joint such as lateral meniscus tears. In addition the articular cartilage may also be damaged." Mine is damaged and I looked up on google/you tube the "lachman test" and you can have a go at this yourself if the pain isn't too much (I would try when all the swelling and most of the pain has gone). Try it on your good leg, sit on something that means your thigh is horizontal (or lower) and your lower leg is vertical, and clasping your lower leg with both hands, thumbs behind the knee push away from and back towards you and see how much movement in the front pointy bit of the knee there is (its really important to fully relax the muscles on the leg). Some movement is normal (varies person to person), if there a noticeable difference between the two then I go and see a specialist (probably best to go anyway). Doing this my right leg wobbles to the point of disturbing a few people i've shown it too but operates ok and if you tense your main muscles you cannot move it at all........ Saying all this your continued pain I think moves this away from ligament damage, or at least just ligament damage, as from what I gather the ligament itself has no nerve endings and doesn't give you pain as such after the swelling/damage from it going have subsided. bradleyh_15
bloody egg chaser! damaging your knee in any way is never good! good luck with your doctor most will just send you on to a phisIo! then they do an initial assessment which costs roughly £100 if you go to a good phisIo then if they think its anything serious eg maniscal tear cruciat or lateral ligament damage then MRI an if cartilage a nice key hole exploratory! MRI costs just short of £2000 now to! thank the lord I have private health care paid for by my work!
jk136
Sorry to bring up this post again... I left my knee for a few more weeks, from my original post, and still nothing improved. I ended up going to the local A&E but they didnt want to xray due to it being radiation. And they said its most likely just badly bruised. Basically they sent me home, told to take painkillers if its bad, and if there is no improvement in a few weeks to call back to my GP. Fast forward to today, I went to my GP 2 weeks ago, who had a suspicion it could be liguaments, but wanted to rule out boney damage so I had an xray (eventually). Results came back last tuesday, and the results are that Ive shattered my kneecap into 6 pieces. I really had no idea - and Ive even been playing rugby, paintballing etc while its been like it. Tomorrows judgement day as I find out hows its going to be treated...3 options: 1: leave it heal naturally which could take anywhere from 4-8 months 2: put it in a cast and immobilise it for 6 weeks and see how it goes 3: operate to remove or possibly pin back together the pieces that are broken off. I think nervous is an understatement! Let just say 2010 isnt my year so far....And worst of all, Ive even been named as captain for the 2010/11 season....and may miss it all!!! The Raven
Thats a bugger mate. I would let them make your mind up for you leaving it wont work. Rugby is like kickboxing and to a lesser extent football. My knee is messed up from kickboxing and i know it needs fixing. I was told at the hospital is needs sorting out when i had a different accident. Needless to say knees are part of my work so im leaving it till its so bad i cant put up with it anymore. Best of luck mate.
Scooter
I'm not 100% on this as regards knee caps in particular but often long term a bone break is better than a ligament tear.......bone will fuse back to as good as new a ligament cannot repair itself hence the surgeries to replace with dead peoples ones or transferring part of another one of your good ones..... ........basically it's crappy short time but trying (did i succeed!? ) to put a slight positive slant on things....best of luck with the recovery
Supranature
Option1-leave it. If I was you I wouldnt even consider this option. I done my knee-cap in playing ice hockey, and the fear of surgery led me to do exactly this. 20 years later, I cant kneel down properly, and occasionally it will swell up and look like someone elses leg. Plus it will always look "knobbly". My lack of care is now biting me in the arse. Option 3 if I could go back in time.
jk136
Thanks for your opinions guys. I think at the moment, Im only thinking short term on this, and so really should consider how things may be in 5 or 10 or 20 years time, and how much trouble it 'could' cause. Just going to have to see how it goes tomorrow and see what they say... If I need a season off from playing and have surgery, but long term its going to be ok, then that will have to be the option I take. Just feeling a bit apprehensive tonight, thats all. bradleyh_15
Not good mate! Sorry to hear this! Definatly think for the long term mate! Sport is fun but you will only be playing for a short period in your life and something like your knee not healing properly will effect your posture, your hips ankles back so many other things so best to make sure its all tip top! Good luck tomorrow I feel for you!

Leave it, and there will be no "could" about it with 6 breaks. Trust me, I know. Dont know what you to to earn a living, but I'm in the building/renovation game, and it can sometimes be the bane of my life, especially when doing floors.
