a98pmalcolm
hay all. ok bought all my bits today to refurb my wheels. When i took a bolt out the split rim to show a nut and bolt place the size i need i noticed like a black substance between the rim and the wheel. My wheels dont pysicaly come in half so i wont loose tire pressure just the centre and be unbolted from the rim itself. Does anyone know what it is? its kinda like tiger seal... is it really needed? And does anyone know were to get rim bolts from like these: http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/5998/felgeschraubem8x32a.jpg Rather than use 8mm allen key bolts as they look rather bulky. I fount this aswell. Can anyone explain a lil better abouy what hes using here? http://img103.imageshack.us/img103/4454/applyadhesiveinnerside.jpg Any help would be great. Thanks Paul
Jurgen-Jm-Imports
i will ask my guy but am pretty sure its just a weather seal - ie bath type style all weather one.. now the key is not too apply to much and make sure you nip all the bolts opposites to keep it evenly spread out.. also make sure you let it then dry before filling with air and then hear for leaks the next day.. should be ok if you follow that procedure
hdnixon
Its a product called Sikaflex Thats the original and best but 15quid a tube. Can be got off ebay
hdnixon
Cheaper than i thought at 8 quid http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sika-Flex-Sikaflex-255-adhesive-body-kit-windscreen-etc_W0QQitemZ250617986002QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint?hash=item3a59fefbd2

It's excellent. I wouldn't recommend regular (as in the cheap crap B&Q sell) bathroom sealers as they peel easily from metal. I'd go with this Sikaflex, or Dow Corning 'All weather mate' As said, apply a small but consistent bead around the edge, then tighten slowly. Or pay a professional (but seriously, it's a PITA when you re-assemble a wheel with new bolts etc only to find it's leaking ) I'd seriously consider buying all new bolts for these too. Dnk
If your wheel has the centre that unbolts and leaves the rims as one piece then you dont need any sealer. If it splits the rims apart then you need sealer and will be the same as doing a 3 piece. If it needs sealing then you do it in the tyre well not on the faces of the rim. Same as i did with my 3 piece in the picture, this is before they were sealed, the 3 pieces join where the arrow is and this is where you put the sealer. garethr
...If it needs sealing then you do it in the tyre well not on the faces of the rim... Exactly what CCW say. They don't put the silicone on the mating surfaces. http://www.ccwheel.com/files/incs/technical/wheel_repair_video.html Edited April 20, 2010 by garethr (see edit history)
Dnk
I was refering to the picture the op posted in post 1 where someone is putting a bead of silicon on the face of the rim, meaning the outer face. The video is pretty much doing what i did and seals the wheel well where the tyre sits. Good video Edited April 20, 2010 by Dnk (see edit history)
garethr
...does anyone know were to get rim bolts from?...Pertsch have an online shop http://www.titanium-touch.de/shop/ Not cheap, though, when you consider how many bolts there are on a set of wheels. Dnk
looks like sikaflex to me too, will never pull the rims apart again with that stuff lol I used Sikaflex but was Black, you remove all the bolts bar 4 but loosen them enough to get a thin sharp blade down the faces and then ease them apart, i did have a wheel balancing machine to hold them on though which does help. The 4 bolts stop it all falling apart. Speak to Ibrar at Speedwells if anyone wants info, weve rebuilt my 19" 3 piece 3 times now with no dramas, other than me changing my mind and going all Black instead of shiny bling Edited April 20, 2010 by Dnk (see edit history)
