seba
Hey i was in the uk yesterday, my first time. As i was travelling to buy my new supra i saw many many signs reading "no hard shoulders blablabla..." don't remember very well. Now i'm back home but it still dwells in my mind, what does no hard shoulders exactly mean as i have no idea
AndrewOW
They are an indication on a motorway, or dual carriageway roads, that don't have an emergency extra lane to stop on, in case of a puncture etc.
Scott
Hard shoulder is like an extra lane that you can coast into should your car brake down. In the UK it is the far left side of the motorway (not sure about other countries). When it says "no hard shoulder for x miles" it means that, should you break down, you will be stuck in the main road... not out the way of traffic. Attero
The hard shoulder is the lane on the far left you don't drive on. It's for breakdowns and emergencies as Andrew mentioned.
