hard shoulder?

Hey i was in the uk yesterday, my first time. As i was travelling to buy my new supra i saw many many signs reading "no hard shoulders blablabla..." don't remember very well. Now i'm back home but it still dwells in my mind, what does no hard shoulders exactly mean as i have no idea :D

Hard shoulder is like an extra lane that you can coast into should your car brake down. In the UK it is the far left side of the motorway (not sure about other countries).

 

When it says "no hard shoulder for x miles" it means that, should you break down, you will be stuck in the main road... not out the way of traffic.
