Lowering / Stiffening the suspension

Hi,

I was thinking about lowering and stiffening the suspension on my TT so I can throw it around a bit more, my freind has a Tuscan and I can almost catch him in a straight line but on the bends he is gone - i rekon with tighter handling I might be on his tail again.

 

The exhaust hangs fairly low - am I going to trash it on speed humps?

How much am I likley to spend?

Anyone got any pics of lowered MkIv's?

Chris Wilson does a custom valved Koni setup which is fully height adjustable.

 

Have a search for Chris's name in the search function and you'll find his contact details.

 

Don't know what the price is though...

 

Budget 1-3k depending on how far you want to take it.....

 

Otherwise some off the shelf Eibach springs are about £180 from http://www.torqueic.com

Im not sure on the exhaust - its not stock - the centre box does seem to hang quite low though - im not sure if the stock boxes are the same - judging from the throaty rumble i would guess that the bore is slightly larger and the cats of gone.

My car is lowered on Eibach springs and I have a Blitz NUR SPEC exhaust.

It looks great but beware...........I have to avoid speed humps like the plague!

No problem on local roads that I know well but if I 'm going somewhere that I'm not so familiar with it can be a bit of a pain.

Just for info, Blitz have redesigned the NurSpec and really screwed it up. The old one could be made to hug up close to the underside of the car, now it has a small kink in it just after the downpipe flange which stops it sitting up against the car. My car can quite happily ground out on slightly rough bit of road when accelerating hard. My car does sit very low though on TRD springs.

In that case I would say it's possible you could have a grounding issue in some locations.

 

The exhaust system can be raised slightly by forming (bending) of the exhaust mountings. I think Chris Wilson and Leon have done this on more than one occasion.

 

As a guide i have no centre box and i still ground my exhaust on the worst speed humps, i'm running with Eibach's and Bilsteins.

 

Removing the centre expansion box may be an option for you as well.

Custom springs (slight lowering, too much wrecks the geometry) and custom Konis, fitted with my "special" geometry settings is 1200 quid. To be honest a stock MKIV with unworn suspension and stock wheels and decent stock tyres will leave a tuscan, handling wise and straight line wise, even an auto MKIV TT. The handling kit will make the difference a lot greater though. Whate ever you do do NOT lower the car more than about 15 or 20 mm, it will handle worse.

Hi there Damar,

I've just had Chris Wilsons suspension set up fitted to my car and can highly recomend it. The car now sits nicely lower giving it a more aggresive look without any problems of tyres rubbing on arches (have heard of several people complaining about this after other set ups / instalations). My HKS Super Dragger only ever scrapes on stupidly high speed bumps and even then only very lightly, as has been said on other posts on this board Chris really does do a good job of tucking the pipe away. With regards to the ride / handling of the car I really can't praise this set up enough. It has made a massive difference not only to cornering with far less body roll and a nice and firm progesive ride giving much better feed back (resulting in higher cornering speeds), but also to both braking and acceleration with much higher levels of traction availabe both on entry and exiting corners. £1200 may seem like alot of money to spend on suspension when compared to the prices of some of the other kit available but when you take into consideration the cost and quality of all these components individually + Chris's time ( shocks, re-valving, springs, fitting and a full goemety set up) it's actually excellent value for money. My cars ABS and traction control used to be working overtime before this set up yet now they rarely make an appearence. To give you an idea as to how good it is last week I was able to keep up with a new style Lotus Elise on a wet and twisty (yet fast) country road even out braking him to make a pass. I've recently spent alot of hard earned cash on my car ( Hybrids, Exhaust, Full De-cat, H-Duty Clutch / Flywheel, Road/Race Pads/Discs/Braided Hoses Suspension) and can honestly say if you've got the money get the suspension 1st, A to B your car will be a lot quicker / more fun to drive than with any other singe uprade. RECOMENDED.
