dani_r
I've started working with a chap who's bang into his RC helis and as I've always had an interest in picking this up I went down to their field where they fly and had a look! After about 2 solid days of talking to this chap and doing a bit of research, i've decided to go for a Titan mini 450 or TRex 450 and I've even looked at a Trex 500! Obviously, these can be big money so as I'm only starting out, the 450 looks like the way to go. So far I've got an ideal spec list in mind: 450 SE (with ally head) or 500 unit Futaba gy401 gyro Futaba servos all round FF7 or 9 tx/rx 2.4Ghz That's what I've managed to come up with so far! I'm still VERY much new to all this, so any advice or thoughts would be great! Maybe even just to know another person who's into it! Cheers Dan
Ewen
Anyone here into RC Helicopters? Some on here never stop going on about them.
SupraStar 3000
Hi Dan, heres a nice thread on he topic and a pic of one of mine. I'm into RC helicopers and agree the 450's are the perfect way to get into the hobby. I've owend a few now but my regular flyier is this Rapor 50 with fuselage. To be honest, i'm more into scale than 3D flying although have a heavily moddified 450 for stuns thats great fun to fly too. My advice is really be careful and study the set-up side. Blade leveling and balancing is VERY imporant. A good headlock gyro will help too. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=197884&highlight=MD500E
ScottC
Hi Dan Personally I would go with the Align Trex 450. You can't beat them for the money and most importantly the spares are easily available. I would always recommend buying a decent flight simulator before forking out your hard earned money on a model. You can then practice and crash as much as you like for free:) Secondly get on the BMFA website and join a club near you that can offer advice, training. I use this website as an invaluable source of information. Heli skills and setup 101 Edit. As for a transmitter. I have always been a fan of Futaba but have now sold all my Futaba transmitters and moved all my models over to Spektrum/JR. The DX7 is great value for money and much more user friendly and great for helis As for servos I would consider Hi tech HS65MG's very smooth, strong. Metal gears are a must, you'll strip plastic gears even with a small crash. The Futaba 401 Gyro is perfect for a 450 Hope this helps

I'm sure I'll be picking your brains for tips at some point!

I'm thinking of trying RealFlight, but as there's so many, I've got no clue!
ScottC
Imo the realflight would be a good choice. It comes with a usb transmitter plug it in and off you go. Most of the others come with adaptors to plugin your existing transmitter. You can download a demo of it from there website and try it out using the keyboard on you pc. I know what you mean theses things do you head in when your first starting out. So much time goes in to building and setting them up. The link I posted above will help you with every step. Cheers Dan If you are starting out I would recommend the t-rex 500 over the 450 anyday, I have both and the 500 is in a different league. It is as stable as my raptor 50 and t rex 600, The 450's are ok but still to twitchy for a begginer. Why do you want to go electric by the way? Again I have both nitro and electric and they both have their advantages. As for the transmitter/receiver setup I would go for Spektrum 2.4 over the Futaba they are a much better set, Futaba are good but in my opinion Jr/Spektrum are superior. You won't go wrong with the 401 it is a very good gyro, and also easy to setup, put a Futaba 9254 with it and the tail will be rock solid, The new Align gyro's have proven to be very stable as well, they are a bit cheaper but just as good. Again servo's, Futaba and Jr both make very good servo's. Most of my heli's and planes have Jr in them, But I did have a heli with futaba gy611, with a bls 251 brushless tail servo and bls 451's on the ccpm, It was an awesome setup. If you are after a nitro helicopter I have something that will be suitable if you are interested, Raptor 50 titan, complete with os 50, spektrum dx6i and ar6000 receiver, futaba and hitec servos, New align autoglow/lipo reciever battery, voltage regulator. It has a quick uk metal head as well. As for the flight simulator's only one is in my opinion perfect for heli flying and that is Phoenix, I have this and aerofly profesional which is better for airplanes. SupraStar 3000
all my models use Spektrum radio gear. Infact, all my models fly with the same handset. 2.5G programable handsets are the way to go. Also recommend RealFlight. 100s of free aircraft to download and play with. My Raptor 50 was fuel but i had it converted to electric. Main reason, its so nice to switch on and fly without the sound and smell of petrol.
creative
I too am looking at getting into it. My mate is a huge fan of them and after spending some time watching him fly I thought I may dabble in it. Had a play with one of the tiny indoor 4ch copters to see how I did and found it fairly easy! He uses spektrum as well. Just got myself aerofly and a usb controller to get practicing. will be getting realflight aswell at somepoint. This is what I like about my 500, I just pick up the case and im of, I have a dx6i in the case aswell which I just use for the 500. It's then always in my van for when I pass somewhere. I couldn't move away from nitro altogether though, I love engines, I had a dillemma whether to get a t rex 600 electric or nitro but had to have the nitro. I fired up my new Saito 125 4 stroke at the weekend in my Mustang, That engine is just brilliant, a work of art to look at and the sound is like no other nitro engine. Aero-M
Any pics of your Mustang mate? Just sold mine to help finance the Supra I have taken a couple as I have been building it. I got the Hanger 9 60 size arf blue nose. The detail on it is superb, the building has been almost problem free. All I have left to do now is put all the small details like guns, aireal, pilot, cockpit etc. Got to cut the cowling out and fit the spinner, but won't do that until I get the engine run in. I have run a tank through it on the ground, Just waiting for a nice day now when i'm not working to get it in the air. I was going to by a turbine but after much thought and advice from Lui have decided to wait a couple of years, And seen as i have always wanted a mustang that seemed the next best thing. I had a look at the 90 size Kyosho mustang but the quality of that was shocking compared to the hanger 9. Will post picks up when it is all complete and some flying ones to, if it fits in the supra It would be nice to get some of it flying over the top of it.
