Big Brake Calliper - DIY ??

Folks,

Scott - on the other forum has done this DIY mod to his callipers and rotor. I would like to know if anybody in here have done this before and what are the results like. Does this mod handle the stress under braking as the stock setup. I would like to know your opinions on this.

PS: Scott is an engineer himself and has done great projects like this in the past. He is very good at these. But I am not sure cutting a piece and welding it back would be good enough as the uncut one. Also not sure about the allen bolts on the rotor whether they can handle more stress due to the added spacer under heavy braking

Mmm... Sounds a bit dodgy to me, but then I don't claim to be an expert. I'd personally prefer the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing my brakes and everything to do with them are made from one piece, you know?

BTW, please no one get anal about that statement - I know there are lots of bits, but you know what I mean!

Scott is a pretty smart engineer but I cannot believe he did something like this. He has done some great projects in the past but this is the worst of all I suppose. I do have a problem too with my big brake kit when I upgraded my brakes. I just picked a set of alloys that would fit over them to sort the issue.

The safer and wiser method.

Spacer is fine, but the lug change is only as good as the prep and welding, which in his case looks a bit Heath Robinson. I'd want to X-Ray the welds after completion, and do it with the upright stripped and blasted, off the car. A hell of a lot of trouble to nail cheap and nasty calipers and discs on, IMHO when UK calipers are available easily and for little money.

Sorry to go a little off topic, but it annoys me when I see this on American forums:

Add paint and wala! New ears to recess the caliper.

Wala??? Where did you get that, you muppet! It's voila, FFS!!

(and breathe....)

;)

Oh - that welding idea on his brakes just looks to me like it will end in tears. And blood. And bits of bone and snot and maybe a few teeth mixed in for good measure.
