DannyW
Been offered a mk3 golf gti 16v as i need a cheap car, has anyone got any experience of them? Are they generally reliable? The figures suggest 35mpg, is this about right? thanks.
Porky1978
Not a bad motor tbh. Its the heaviest of the GTI's though so 35mpg might be at the top end of achievable if you drive it 'normally'. Generally quite reliable as with most VW's and if looked after properly shouls see well over 100,00 miles no trouble.
pezzler
How cheap are we talking? I'd sooner have a mk2
Abz
Yeh they are pretty reliable, you would be ideally looking at 30MPG. Solid cars too, but if you want to do better on petrol, get the Polo!
DannyW
How cheap are we talking? I'd sooner have a mk2 Cheaper than a decent mk2, about £700.
JustGav
Wife has a mk3 gti, and she enjoys driving it and giving it stick Has been reliable, will say that, but we purposely got a low mileage 8v version..
DannyW
but we purposely got a low mileage 8v version.. Why? known to have less problems than the 16v? or to be better on fuel?

caseys
They're alright. Some water hoses are a bit prone but they're cheap to replace. Suspension bushes and rear shocks go quite a bit, but otherwise my mk3 never broke down once in it's 8 years of ownership and it went to the scrappage scheme with 166k on the clock
