Dave F
Changed the oil at the weekend and spilt some so while I was cleaning it off I decided to gently spray the rest of the engine with a very fine hose to clean it up. I took it out after this and it ran fine for a blat up the motorway, but the next day it started fine then began to misfire which got worse until it cut out. It started a couple of hours later and also tonight for a few minutes then it did the same and it wont start again. Also there is white smoke coming from the exhaust pipe so I assume there is water somewhere. What do I do now any help appreciated. p.s. my inner voice was telling me not to try and clean it perhaps I'll listen in future
Homer
This might be a long shot but have you checked for water pooling where the spark plugs are? If there's water there it would affect the spark. Also have you checked there no water in the air box/air filter?
Dave F
I changed the air filter after all of this so that was fine I thought that any water left would have evaporated when I took it for the first run but I am no expert so correct me if I'm wrong. Dave F
Just rechecked the oil level and it is slightly above the F mark on the dipstick could my probs be down to too much oil I was pretty careful when filling though?
Lazarus
I'm pretty sure the miss fire is down to water in an electrical connector somewhere, disconnect plugs in engine bay one at a time and blow them through to dry them. The white smoke is from moisture not oil, oil burns blue. That could be down to a lot of water in your exhaust, we have had a lot of rain these last few days. Trying not to be the harbinger of doom, but those symptoms are also associated with a head gasket gone pop. (I don't think its that)
Dave F
I must admit this did cross my mind but I shoved it to the back again . I will give the plugs a try tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed Thanks matey
carl0s
A couple of weeks ago I did my engine bay with some Autoglym Engine/Machine degreaser. When it came to washing it off, I read the distructions which said "cover sensitive parts and wash with hosepipe". I looked around the engine back and thought Oh Fuck it. I got the jetwash and sprayed all around, although I was quite brisk around electrical bits like the resistor pack and my alarm siren and stuff. When I started the engine, there was a misfire, fairly consistent though so presumably I'd just knocked out one cylinder. After about 20 - 30 minutes of ~1800 - 2200 rpm tickover, with the bonnet up, all was fine. My windscreen looked like I'd been in a rainstorm though with all the condensation from within the engine bay. Touch wood it's been fine since. I suppose if I'd knocked out more than one cylinder, I wouldn't have been able to run the motor and drive out the moisture with the heat. My next plan would have been to get the hairdryer or heat gun in there around the coil packs. Not sure if this is worth a try for you?
