tepster
i worked with this american guy and he could never understand why he had to pay tax on fuel, and pay road tax. "i gotta pay da same s**t twice" he used to say. he sold his camaro 6 months later. thank you government. he also said the best job to have in the uk is "single mom" hehe funny guy for a yank! Jake
it's so much higher than other developed countries? Ah, but is it? Petrol in Holland, Belgium, Denmark etc etc is similarly priced. I think it's actually dearer in Holland than it is here.

how_supra
I think we should also ask the likes of BP who repeatedly make ridiculous amounts of profits yoy......there is no explanation, just accept I saw a sign on a motorway garage once that read something like Please don't smoke near our petrol pumps...........your life may not be worth much, but our petrol is! Kopite
what does the tax on fuel go towards if we're paying road tax too? if that £1.30 a mile thing ever comes in i'm moving abroad!!
SteveR
75% of the pump price is tax, it's that simple. If petrol prices go up (because of oil prices going up) the amount of tax the government get also goes up, as it's a %, not a fixed amount. How fair. Only a couple of pence per litre is profit for the oils companies/petrol stations.

Kopite
but where does the tax go? if that coupled with road tax still isnt enough to get a decent public transport system then what's it bein spent on?
how_supra
What about a petrol import service? You could set up little stalls along the hard shoulder (like they do in Tunisia) Sorry Kopite, it is totally crap, and everyone moans about it, road tax, council tax, car tax, value added tax, insurance and everything else that we pay out just to use the roads which are congested, full of cracks..........the government can't just give an explanation because there isn't one I say get rid of the monarchy...........if that's not too controversal...... Bobbeh
If it wasnt put on petrol it'd be lumped elsewhere. Petrol is an easy target as it supposedly hits people who can afford to drive all over the place. But its unfair on those who need it for a living. Gaz Walker
Japan too pays the same price, but they get better stuff - 100 octane for their cars. Gaz.
