what is this red button guys near the gearstick/not the button to shift the gears???

If its a button with a light and not just a light or button on its own its probably for the rear fog light. Needed for the mot, the switch (not present on jspec cars) has to have a warning light. I also think the light its self has to be on/in the switch.

Odd place to put it tho.

probably your rear fog button if you own an import. when the car is running it should light up when turned on to iindicate that the rear fog is on. if it is that anyway!!
