Paul
Anyone had any experience of these, I'm only looking for a basic unit to cool down a bedroom. I've read that they aren't as efficient as 'proper' units nut are they worth having. Cheers, Paul.
Rob
You'll need to be able to hang the exhaust pipe out the window. They work best with the door shut as well. My one worked well during that monster heat wave two or three years ago.

Cheers Rob, yeah I knew about the exhaust hose and I guessed you needed the door shut otherwise it'll try cooling well beyond it's capacity. I suppose if you give them half a chance they are OK? I'm fed up with going for weeks without a proper nights kip when it hots up so thought about getting one. You still got yours or did it blow up
Nic
I'm fed up with going for weeks without a proper nights kip when it hots up so thought about getting one. My aircon has just packed up in my bedroom and it is over 30 degrees here at night at the moment
Paul
What a nightmare! bet you're knackered. Not hot here yet but when it warms up everyone goes mad buying up fans and small aircon units so just trying to beat the rush. Paul
TrickTT
B&Q are selling proper air conditioners with an inside and outside units for about £600.00. take a bit of fitting but much better than the mobile units. Scoboblio
I've got a cheap portable one I bought from Comet last summer, does a good job but waaaaaay too noisy to leave on when you're trying to sleep - only good for cooling the room down before you go to bed IMO. SupraTT2004
IMHO portable air conditioning units are cr*p. My uncle does this for a living and most of the time he is replacing the portable units for proper units and they are not much more money either for the proper unit. JustGav
I bought a portable one last summer cos I got annoyed at the hot living room... While it does the job, it is noisy... sits in the corner, needs a pipe that goes out the window and is just generally a little bit of a pain in the ass.....BUT it does work Gav

You still got yours or did it blow up I've still got it, we borrowed two of them from work for our wedding over two years ago. They were about £600 each. I'd take it back to the office, but I moved 250miles away.

MaveriK
Got a portable one in the bedroom and it works a treat but as said in previous posts its noisey and u have to hang a pipe out of the window to vent. Invested in a ceiling fan which i am sooo impressed with, if i had bought that first i dont think i would have parted with £300 on the AC. Paul
Call me tight but I was looking at this one, now about £150 with another £15 off this weekend! If it don't do what they say or packs up then Homebase will get the bugger back http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=20001&langId=-1&catalogId=3401&productId=119687

cashpoint
May be a stupid point but if you need a window open for the exhaust isn't that a bit like leaving the door open?
Paul
May be a stupid point but if you need a window open for the exhaust isn't that a bit like leaving the door open? You need to exhaust the hot air from the room, ideally without letting more in. One tip I saw on a US website was to get a piece of perspex and cut it to the size of the opening and fix the vent hose into it and velcro it to the frame of the open window. Looks ok and seals off window opening without blocking light, this way it doesn't let warm air in. They can have the pipes fitted through brick if you like or you can extract to another area of the house that isn't air conditioned. Anyway, went and got a couple from Homebase tonight @£135 a piece. See if they work, if not then they'll get them back Paul
Sharpie
I got a foam insert for the end of the hose and this fills in the window gap.
Paul
No, nothing like that here Peter. Does your window open from the side or is it a sash type as these are easier to fill? If it's a normal side open then a pic would be nice mate? could save me a few quid and some time! Trying it out at the moment with the hose wedged in an open window and no seal and it works bloody well.................think I'll go and put me coat on, it's chilly in here Paul
Sharpie
My windows open from the bottom, outwards so, I can trap the foam and the hose end (which is shaped at one end for the foam) in the window. It's not 100% but, does the job good enough. I got the AC unit from B&Q years back and the foam came with it.
Paul
Right Peter, I might try that with some wide white foam I've got in the garage. Just wedged in either side of the nozzle is it? Paul
toyotasuprauk
Paul I'm thinking about getting one of these units have you got the model number/make?
Paul
Yeah mate, the model number is: H253797 and the make is 'Homebase' their own? As I've said I've tried it out and it seems to do the job but it will depend on how well you place the exhuast hose as to how efficient it is. I've got some perspex now so I can fit the hose end into it and wedge it in the window opening which will give a perfect seal from hot outside air. Waiting for the heatwave now so I can see if it really does the job When in Air con mode they are fairly noisy, depends if you are a heavy sleeper or you can always put it on for an hour or so before to cools the room down. Only just got my two units so I can't give proper feedback, however if they are shite then Homebase will take them back I'm sure.
