Chris Wilson
I live out in the sticks and my local exchange has only, in the last few days, become ADSL compliant. I would like recommendations for service providers who can offer me a fixed IP address and an uncapped service. I'd like to be able to run my own FTP and web servers. I'd like a 2 meg service, although i am not sure if our exchange line will support more than 1 meg until I apply properly. I am currently with Freeserve (Wanadoo) on Home Highway ISDN. Thanks. imi
Chris...if youre not on a budget but want to invest in quality, reliability, performance then go for ZEN....end of story.
ewizzy
With ZEN, awesome providers! Would have recomended nildram until Pipex bought them
Jake
Can I ask why you want a fixed IP address, Chris? It might not be necessary and that might give you more choices of ISPs
Homer
Zen are highly rated. Nildram used to be one of the best, didn't realise they'd been bought by Pipex, hope the service doesn't suffer! Eclipse are also very good and highly recommended, reliable, no caps and better than average customer service. UK online might also be worth considering since they've brought in much higher bandwidth at a very reasonable price (8mb for £30odd pm)
imi
Zen can offer you 8 IP addresses for FREE......(5 Usuable) Ive got two connections with them and have had it for over 2 years....no complaint what so ever....

Jake
I run a FTP server and use a dynamic DNS name, works fine.

Nildram service has suffered already! you try getting through to their tech desk!. Used to be able to call them 24hrs per day for the price of a local call, now you cant get through to them and they only answer between 08:30 and 17:30. ewizzy
I run a FTP server and use a dynamic DNS name, works fine. I used to as well. Does make it easier if you have a fixed IP though I used DynDNS, what do you use?
Jake
Same. I pretty much have to use http://www.DynDNS.org because it's the only choice in my router's software.

Chris Wilson
Thanks. I am with Freeserve on Home Highway ISDN at the moment. I suppose I have to lose my [email protected] address altogether and get people to recognize a new one? I have 3 domains hosted with a company called Gradwell, who have been superb. I could use one of those i suppose. There's no way of keeping the formul3.freeserve one unless i keep a Freeserve account going, is there? Thanks for the advice, Zen seem quite expensive, but I asked this question on a couple of other forums, and Zen was recommended by so many people it seems a no brainer to look elsewhere. i just want Internet stuff to work, with no hassle. I am no geek with PC's or Internet at all!
Jake
Chris, To keep your email address you might be able to do what I did when I left BTOpenworld. I didn't cancel my account, I just changed it to a Pay-As-You-Go type account (no monthly fee, just pay for the calls) That was nearly 2 years ago and my BTOpenworld email addresses still work fine. I never ever use the PAYG account but I just have Outlook to collect emails from BTOpenworld. Worth looking into.
imi
I think Jake is spot-on with the PAYG advice on freeserve, mind you some companies may disconnect the email addy if you dont use the account for a while. I used to be with Freeserve, went PAYG and my a/c was not accessible after a few months. "i just want Internet stuff to work, with no hassle" - that to me says ZEN. BTW: I dont work for ZEN, like you I am giving honest 1st hand advice You have a Domain name so link that to whatever email a/c you want, that way as long as you own the domain, the email associated with that will remain active and the same. ewizzy
BTW: I dont work for ZEN, like you I am giving honest 1st hand advice That would be a nice commute for you!!! ZEN are in Rochdale!
womble
I can confirm what a couple of people have mentioned in that you can keep your Freeserve address. I changed from them to BT (seems to work just fine and recently got a free upgrade to 2mb) and just changed my account to a PAYG one. I can still get the mails no problem at all but if ever the account is inactive for more than 30 days (might be 60) they suspend it, it can however be reactivated by yourself online or via a call to their customer services.
