martini
I've seen a nice compilation video before of the bollards in Manchester, but hadn't seen this one: XxNPaNNm2LM

devan
Thats some bad engineering lol. Usually the bar which goes up and down has a pressure sensitive rubber strip along the bottom and it should then retract when it hits something (ie, the car roof), and in this case, the bollards should retract too. Obviously a cheapo from eBay
Rob
If the bollards retract when they touch something, what's point in having them?
Attero
If the bollards retract when they touch something, what's point in having them? Exactly what I thought. They are there to stop people and thats the job it did.

Rob
Odd thing though, I've had these installed in works at various colleges. The one at Loughborough was mainly for buses that go through the middle of the campus, but various staff can use it too. Based on that video, how does it know when to raise up, is it time? A bus can drive through but if two cars try to get through nose-to-tail it will rise up and trap the second car, even though two cars are shorter in length than a bus. If it works on induction loops, how do multi axled trucks get through? Funny thing is, at every college some kid always tries it on and gets stuck, and they always try and blame the college despite all the signs and the big yellow and black bollards so obviously there to STOP you entering a particular area
merckx
If the bollards retract when they touch something, what's point in having them? They won't just retract when they touch anything light like someone standing on it, but it makes sense to have it set maybe at a few hunded kilograms so it won't lift a car up into the air.
