RedM Posted March 26, 2010 Share Posted March 26, 2010 I had to use one of the company cars today and managed (we think) to blow the turbo! 2.0 litre Mazda 6 diesel. I'd just come off the motorway where I'd been doing a leisurely 50 thank to roadworks. Pulled away from a roundabout and went up a hill. I was doing about 35 (40 zone) as I was unsure why the satnav appeared to be sending me away from my destination! Anyhow, after about 200-300 metres up this hill the revs went through the roof. At first I thought the car had come out of gear. It hadn't. Then I thought that the clutch had gone. Either way the engine was now screaming. I knocked it into neutral and the revs still screamed! The only thing I could think of was to turn the engine off. At this point, a mere few seconds into the ordeal, I looked in the rearview and the road was full of light blue smoke. Thankfully there was no-one behind. So, engine off and pointing uphill, I slowed down very quickly and pulled onto a verge. I rang work, explained the situation and they sent the RAC out. Long story short, I got towed back to Leeds and the car is at a Mazda dealership. So, does this sound like turbo failure? I thought you'd have to rag a car to blow it like that rather than be pootling along like I do these days. Are Mazda 6s known for this? Thanks. Graham S Posted March 26, 2010 Share Posted March 26, 2010 I'd say so dude, sounds like the turbo as popped and the oil has gone through the cooler and into the intake, thats what the car was running on hence the revving... This car has a massive problem the DPF regeneration system and it loads the engine oil with unburnt fuel when the DPF filter gets blocked...! Eventually the oil level rises to the point that the diesel engine will try to compress it's own oil and run on that. Unless you stall it or kill the ignition it will run itself to destruction. We have just had our 58 plate Mazda 6 Sport's contract terminated as exactly the same thing happened to me in January. Mazda couldn't give a satisfactoy explanation as to why it happened, why there was no warning lights until after the event and eventually Lex leasing agreed to return the car to Mazda and claim the costs back from them. Mazda 6 forums are full of stories like this. One guy is going to court after getting a £9K bill from his dealer.......:rolleyes: This could get messy!! H. Havard Posted March 27, 2010 Share Posted March 27, 2010 Martin Advise your fleet manager to request a sample of the oil to check for contamination level. As well as my car our fleet just inherited a Mazda 3 2.0d Sport 57 plate. Because of the problems I had with mine I checked the oil as soon as it came in....sure enough oil level risen towards the X. Mazda's get out is....the handbook says check you oil weekly. We phoned the dealership to book the Mazda 3 in for an oil change, despite there being no warning lights showing their advice was "Don't drive the car....call the RAC". RAC came and towed it in.
