miko_supra
I have a room in my new house which has a ceiling covered in artex that I want rid of and it also has a small bit of old water damage. Can this simply be smoothed over or will it need ripping down with new boards?
Supranature
Artex "can" be removed with a decent steamer, but its a PITA of a job, and the ceiling may have been tex'd from new, in which case it won't have been skimmed prior. Cut away the affected area to the nearest joist, patch-board in the same thickness, then your plasterer can skim the lot in. Artex really needs skimming over tbh, assuming youe ceiling is ok. JamieP
Platerboard is cheap mate, just screw another layer over the top with 50mm drywalls and re skim it.

I dont move in till the start of next month, so I don't know the full extent of the damage, I shall have to see. Edit: Do you mean putting new board over the top of what is already there? (I'm a complete noob at all this btw)
JamieP
Yes new board over what is there will be fine. Labour/materials £200 would cover it id say, if you get the materials there i might be able to lend you Danial one saturday (if he is up for it) you would have to pick him up from high wycombe, just give him a £100 and help him hold the boards up while he screws them and he will skim it. Ganty
I'm a plasterer would sort you a good price pal but Its a bit far from Nottingham to Buckinghamshire !lol as jamie says the best way would be to overboard & skim or cut out the damaged part & re board then Pva and re skim the whole lot! The artex shouldn't need to come off as it doesnt look very heavy so should skim over fine:d
