Guest donx95
Can anybody advise, please. My rear nearside caliper was slightly seized to the point where the pad was rubbing on the disc causing heat build up at high speed. My local parts supplier provided a replacement caliper which proved too big across the fixing bolt centres. As far as I know, and see from the existing demantled caliper, it's a single pot J spec unit. The car is a '93 model import - are there different sized calipers on any of these? The supplier was convinced that he offered the correct part according to his book - I'm now slightly worried. I could understand the replacement part being larger if 2 pot, but it's not! Cheers Don
Stonkin
There are j'spec brakes and uk spec brakes. J'specs 'can' come with either from the factory, or equally have been installed by a previous owner. uk's are 4 pot front, 2 pot rear j'specs are 2 pot front, 1 pot rear
LOGIE
I had the same prob recently mate with the pad rubbing and heat building up. Are you sure you need a replacement caliper? you can get a caliper refurb kit from Toyota for around £30, As far as im aware all J-spec calipers are the same size, but i may be wrong. I solved my prob by fitting new pads and discs (the heat was building up due to the piston had come that far out it could not retract therefor pads were always rubbing, discs were heavily worn which was bad maintainance on my part). I hope this helps,
Stonkin
J'spec http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=206292&highlight=spec+brakes UK http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=197934&highlight=brakes
Nic
It's confusing referring to them as J-spec and UK spec brakes, as many J-spec Supras were factory fitted with the 'UK Spec' 4 pot/2pot brakes. Basically all UK spec Supras were factory fitted with the larger 4pot/2pot brakes. Some J-spec Supras were factory fitted with the smaller 2pot/1pot brakes, some were factory fitted with the larger 4pot/2pot brakes. Don if you having trouble working out which you have fitted post some pics so we can identify.
Guest donx95
Many thanks all for info. I can categorically state that the rear calipers are the one pot which I would expect and therefore assume that they conform to the J spec. My question comes back to the issue of whether different sizes of single pot calipers were fitted to '93 models i.e. that the distance between securing bolts can vary? I hope not!! Cheers Don.
