sidewaysbad
Hi all, I got a problem I've not seen before and was wondering if anyone else had. While changing the pads a hairline crack in the caliper right at the bleed nipple was found. Its a new one on me. It doesn't look abused or dented. The only idea Ive got so far is something has been over tightened (how can you obertighten th bleed nipple!). No pictures I'm afraid. I've still got a few months on the warrenty the importers gave me so hopefully I won't have to fork out to change it. So despite the sunshine its back to the diesel :
Steve
There was someone on here a little while ago who had the same problem, cracked at the bleed nipple. Bit worrying.
Homer
Actually there's quite a few people who've had this with the smaller J-spec calipers.
sidewaysbad
D'oh once more the search button comes in handy AFTER I've posted my "new" thread. Bit scary though. I was tanking along last night merrily when actually the thing could have self destructed at any time! Seems like 11 year mark is a common factor. Go check yours now!!!! Nic
Might be stress fracture as a result of brake pressure on discs. When the pads are forced onto the disc, the calipers have to resist the opposite force outwards. Maybe a slight imperfection in the casting or design weakness causing the fracture
SupraBabe
That is 4th one I've heard of this year... Seems as tho 10 years is about the life span for a j-spec caliper I'm guessing...

JohnA
does this also happen with UK calipers? By the way, front JSpec calipers from here appear to be £58 each, UK Spec £4 more each. That's where I got my rear UK discs from, £150 all in, inc pads, not too bad. Maybe it's worth a shot mate.
J4CK50N
Yeah, it happened to me, very very lucky as I was having something done on the car, and looked underneath, it was p*ssing out every time you pressed the pedal. Caught it at just the right time. Apparently it is becoming more of a common problem. AS someone said i think it is to do with age, or overtightening by a previous owner

TLicense
Has anyone informed Toyota about this? I once reported a brake failure on my 15 year old MR2 to Toyota HQ (GB) and they sent a guy out to my house who stripped the brake system down to find the cause, as any flaw in the safety systems would require a re-call, even to a car that's as old as that. Turned out it was the aftermarket discs I'd got that were shite (black diamond :thumbdown )
JohnA
the piccy don't give much info will the four pot fit my j spec 93 tt The four pot caliper would match a UK-spec disc, I would think. JSpec is the 2-pot, isn't it?
SUPRALOOPY
probably but the j spec brakes are rubbish and want to put uk's on. so i need info on what to get to put uk on my j spec. so i will have to change discs as well????
Steve
Yep new discs, pads and calipers if you want to upgrade. Will need to change both front and back.
SUPRALOOPY
can't you just do fronts
Steve
Have heard you must do both, or the brake balance gets all screwed
JohnA
Yeah, discs, pads and calipers at the very least. I'd also investigate if the brake lines are the same, maybe the lengths are slightly different, who knows...
Steve
If changing calipers its probably worth putting on braided hoses, Dude can get these £60 delivered for front and rears.
Jake
can't you just do fronts Yes you can do just the fronts. Lots of us have that setup. It might not be 'the done thing' to a proper engineer like Chris Wilson but it's fine.

JohnA
They're the same. Ah, there ya go! Are the caliper mounting points the same as well then Jake?
Gordon F
Brake hoses, caliper mounting points and caliper mounting bolts are the same. What you will have to do, if you are fitting UK brakes to a J-spec car, is to cut back, or cut off completely, the back plate behind the disc. Andy C
Just to say I had a cracked caliper on my J-Spec last year. The only thing that can be done is a replacement.
