R it's refering to the sequential operation of the turbos, before 4000rpm only 1 turbo is producing boost, after 4000rpm both are producing boost. The exhaust housing scroll of the turbine side of the turbo is bifurcated, and 2 cylinders feed one leg, two the other, maximising the cylinder pulsing effect of a 4 cylinder engine.
