Digsy
So... Last night AVG installs a major update that required me to restart my PC, which I put off until today. hey presto - no internet access. I can't log into my router, my NAS, my network printer admin page won't come up. Basically everything internet related is fooked. After uninstalling AVG everythin works fine. I've stood by AVG during their various cock-ups and I'm now doing afresh install. If that locks me out again I'm looking for an aternative. Anyone else affaced? supra_aero
Must say this new AVG is very impressive. Been warned already 2 or 3 times about sites which have malware on them BEFORE going on them. Totally normal websites which I'd never expect to get crap from. Makes me wonder how many are already on my pc!!
Digsy
Well I've done a full uninstall-reinstall and it seems to be working fine now. I've even got the link scanner enabled and its behaving. Maybe it was a borked update or something.
Abz
I'd assume some sort of corruption when downloading definition files. I take it when it didn't work after the restart, you tried rebooting a couple of times?
Swampy442
Carried out the update and no issues here either.

Digsy
I'd assume some sort of corruption when downloading definition files. I take it when it didn't work after the restart, you tried rebooting a couple of times? Yep. I thought it was a router issue at first because my net connection went very sporadic and I couldn't login to my router admin page to check the internet connection. After I'd realised it wasn't I rebooted twice to see if it went away. TBH I uninstalled AVG on a whim but that cured the issue instantly. It wasn't just definition files. It was a major update to the software itself. When I last updated I had similar issues and after search in the web found a tip that disabling the link scanner would cure it, which it did. After this latest update, it all runs fine with everything enabled. Maybe if you have the link scanner disabled when running the update it messes something up? I dunno. stevie_b
Do yourselves a favour and get Norton 360. No thanks. Is Norton stuff still bloatware or have they improved it these days? I don't like the "one-touch" approach these packages tend to employ: "click this button, and you will be fully protected against everything". Digsy
Is it called that because you need a 360 core processor running at 360GHz and 360Gb RAM to open Notepad after you install it?
Willson
I had a problem at the weekend which I can only put down to AVG. All was working fine and then AVG requested a reboot. I did so and Windows would not get past the "Welcome" screen, just sat there. I rebooted many times and had the same result. In the end I went into safe mode and did a system restore to just before the AVG update was installed and it was okay. I havent tried to update again yet! Chris Wilson
My PC froze up this morning, for no apparent reason, it runs 24 / 7. I re booted twice and it was OK. I have auto updates of AVG enabled. Coincidence?
Digsy
Its being discussed on the AVG forum. http://forums.avg.com/gb-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=71903&page=5&type=0 The fix seems to be to uninstall and reinstall in the majority of cases. Digsy
Quick update. The uninstall/reinstall fix worked fine for one whole day then it all cr@pped out again after another update. These issues are all mentioned in the AVG knowledgebase now and have to do with the fact that AVG9 is not compatible with ZoneAlarm, which I also use. The fix for the original AVG9 was to disable the link scanner / surfshield. After upgrade #1 and the uninstall / reinstall AVG still supported this workaround. Now, however, after upgrade #2 this workaround doesn't work anymore. It would appear that AVG have deliberately made their product incompatible with ZoneAlarm, and are being rather cheeky about placing the blame at ZoneLab's door. ZoneLabs have obligingly said they will release a patch to fix this issue this month (I think its already available in beta test form). The other option is to uninstall ZoneAlarm (obviously what AVG intend for you to do) or bin AVG. …so as of last night I'm an Avast user, and I'm happy again

Thorin
I stopped using AVG when version 8 first came out, and all the problems with that. I too recommend Avira.
Soop Dogg
Do yourselves a favour and get Norton 360. Oh and BAWHAHAHA Don't knock it unless you've tried it. Norton has ALWAYS been the first thing for me to UNinstall when I've bought a PC with it on. However..... I recently mocked someone when they suggested I get 360 for my new machine. Then I started looking into it and it's not like anything Norton has put out before. I ran it on Vista from last June to October when I upgraded to Windows 7. I kept with it on Windows 7 and it has continued to be absolutely no trouble whatsoever. The only thing I'd recommend not bothering with is it's online back-up facility as once you've filled it they want you to pay cash to increase the size of your online storage. Other than that, it does scans when the machine is idle and pauses them when I start using the machine again, it picks up anything dodgy and lets you know about them in a report. It keeps things pretty tidy and quietly gets on with things while I get on with whatever I want to do. All in all, I find myself recommending something from a company whose products I always looked upon as bloatware and cr@p - until now. 360 isn't the old Norton. I've dumped AVG and installed N360 on my Vista Laptop now too. AVG destroyed my system on a recent 'update' and I'm not going back.
Martin J
The new Norton IS 2010 suite took the best-of in a round-up of all the major A/V products by PC Pro recently - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/alist/internet-security. We use Symantec's corporate version at work, and whilst like all suites it's slow when scanning, the actual program footprint is decent and performance doesn't take a noticeable hit. Their corporate products have always been better than their consumer ones though, but looks like they finally put some effort into it and came up trumps. I have Kaspersky, personally. Works fine for me with no issues yet so far.
Digsy
I too recommend Avira. I've just dumped Avast after I noticed my system slowing down drastically over the last few weeks - especially when typing text into forms in IE (including posts on this forum). At first I thought that one of Avast's real-time sheilds was just slowing things down, so I uninstalled it and tried Avira simply because I'd seen it mentioned as another alternative on here. However, after a full system scan Avira picked up 8 low-threat viruses that both AVG and Avast had completely missed, and now everything is back to normal. I'll stick with Avira for now I think
