So hes quite safe? I know he has to pay £35 a year to play online? Will it work wireless or will it have to be hardwired?

My brother inlaw and sister dont know anything about game systems. So he is more or less free to get what ever one he wants.

Thought id best find out a bit more before he gets it.

He is 12 BTW

Im more than happy with my PS3

Yep, you can get a wireless adaptor. Currently using one. Not had any problems with signal or gameplay. Im using the elite, would recommend it - had it for quite a while. Comes with a nice fat hard drive and the HDMI cable (although I did hear that some of the newer arcades, etc, come with them, too. Worth a check.

Frankly, it's the ( o )( o )!

but if he is gonna play online get it wired in if you can, much more reliable.

One of the biggest internet myths going :eyebrows:

With decent equipment wireless is just as good as wired

I have an elite, afew months old. Had afew hours use if that.

Out of everything I liked the controller, felt well built and gripped well in the hand, shame the consoles sound like a nasa shuttle on launch..

Hmm, please point me to learn something new...

Im going on my experience:

Virgin 20mb wired or wireless is no different what so ever.

Thats for browsing the web, downloading, streaming and online gaming.

And also about 20 or so blokes at work who's wireless connections I setup for their home networks... There has never been any lag or slower download speeds with wired or wireless.

But, if im wrong so be it. Would like a read up on it though if you have any links :search:

Its much better than in the old wireless a/b days. But the wireless for the moment still has to carry extra information in each of its packets for security and data quality which than has be en/decoded each end(which in turn is adding extra time to your conenction).

Im not trying to say that wireless will offer worse download speeds as this is certainly more limited by your ISP than your routing equipment. It is the latency that for gaming is the issue caused by wireless routers.

Holding a Skype call at a high quility for any length of time over a wireless connection will demonstrate where wireless can fall down as its not fully duplex(meaning it can not send and receive at the same time), and will often either corrupt the voice being transmitted or just drop the call.

On the plus side a lot of these issues are so marginal for general use that as long as you have a strong signal you will not notice them. Chances are that for general web surfing you will not notice the difference between the two, infact most people could improve that exeperiance just by changing there DNS service(more on that another time).

For gaming though every millisecond can count. especially when your as bad as me so give yourself that additional advantage if you can. Or when your online playing against friends on wireless, give there wife a call and ask her to stick the microwave on.

My best attempts to get the nephew to get a PS3 have failed. He wants a 360 to play halo on.

Whats the deal with these things now? Have the sorted the massive issues they used to have? or do they still burn out faster than an rx7?

I was inclined to go with the PS3, as it's more advanced machine...

WiFi enabled. (so no need for wireless adaptors)

Bluetooth connectivity (no 'old hat' infra red here)

Blue Ray player.

Oh and the PSNetwork is free. (X-Box Live £35)

I considered buying an X-Box but when I compared the spec of both machines the PS3 was easily the winner, by far, and it even looks better (gloss black) and matches in perfectly with my TV etc, makes me glad I didn't get an X-Box actually, I'd have had to hide that big daft white box round back out of site, but then again the controllers wouldn't have worked.....infra red of course!

Save yourself the trouble of buying an X-Box, realising they're crap, sticking it on eBay then going out and buying a PS3, and just convince that nephew of yours to just get a PS3 in the first place!

I have both. Did prefer the Xbox but I prefer the PS3 now for lots of reasons, including; (but not limited to)

- Controller recharge via USB (no batteries to replace or stupid rechargeable battery docks)

- Free to play online

- Marginally better graphics and sound seems much crisper when connected to an external amp

- Better multimedia machine (web browser, blueray etc)

woohoo another xbox vs ps3 thread!

just to put my 10pence worth I have both. Xbox is better for games and online. PS3 better for media and blu-ray. nuff said. :)

i feel the xbox is geared more towards gamers, and the ps3 is for the occasional home users that want more than a wii. I have a wii too, it collects dust!

xbox - media centre - media centre remote control - Torrents- iplayer.

Wife friendly way of watching downloaded movies open license documentries, iplayer and all the other catch up services on the big screen.

Plus a great way to set age limits on games so i can let the step son play the xbox without having to worry that he is playing my latest version of which ever murder/genocide game is not appropriate for kids at the time.

Lets face it they are both great ways of loosing days of your life, i just want eveyone to buy xbox's so i can race/kill/befriend them.

Xbox 360 is the better games console, PS3 the better media centre and games machine.

The XBOX is just better at gaming - especially online.

All consoles should be covered under warranty, so should be OK. The newer ones aren't supposed to RRoD.

EDIT:

Didn't see this, by edd_t:

I'd go wired, and get the Xbox live code from here.

IMO a 12 year old will enjoy an XBOX much more.
