an expensive squeak

a couple of weeks back my car decided to start squeaking from the rear when its driven. when stationery and the back end is pushed up and down the squeak re-appears.

i did a bit of research on here and came to the conclusion that it may be the bushes. anyway i took it to a garage and the mechanic checked it over and told me both rear shocks need changing along with both rear upper arms! i wasnt going to argue as he was a mechanic afterall but i cant help thinking he's pulling the p1ss as the car flew through its mot about 2 months ago. surely the dude who mot'd my car would have picked up on the fact that these parts were on their last legs or not?

Get someone else to check it out, 3LL who live's in Hull took his for it's MOT (and where I got all my current work done). They wanted 900 pounds or something, to do some suspension work, he said he knew his car was fine..

Took it to another garage for the MOT an it didn't even get an advisory.

For expensive work like that it's always best to get a second opinion from someone trustworthy so contact Dr Jekyll :)

I'd spray some lube on the upper arm fulcrum points to see it the noise goes away. If it stay, get some new shocks/springs/ coilovers on there.

Don't be surprised if your mechanic is telling the truth, these are old cars now, so things like arm bushes and shocks will need replacing soon enough.

I can understand the upper arms needing to be replaced as Dan mentioned above they are getting on a bit, but if the shocks were gone then I am pretty sure you would have known about it?

The car would have been harsh over bumps & you might have got either side looking uneven height.

This is true, I went to JAPTECH in hull, whome I have spent over £1200 with and they wanted to charge me £900 to sort the upper arms, I took the car elsewhere for an MOT, and it went straight through without even a mention of these "dangerously worn parts" I have also since found out that the rattle they were refferring to was simply the bump stops on the boot which i need to replace.. Glad I didnt pay out £900 for this work to be done tbh!!

My advice would always be get a second oppinion before you get work done if its super pricey.. :)
