lui
Lui how would the lorry driver not notice he hit a car though?!?! Or did he notice, just it took 250m s to slow down? About 250m from hitting to stopping at first not sure if he knew but would imagine lorry driver must of felt something but dad said it felts like ages & thought his life was going to come to a end he was just amazed how he stayed in front with out being shaken off & getting thrown all over the motorway
supra_aero
Glad you Dad survived to tell the tale. Must have been frightening!
merckx
I am with Matt with this. How can police come to an incident and do their crash investigations and not notice that. There would be tyre marks on the roads stretching hundreds of meters. I call BS. I may be wrong of course Why would there necessarily be an investigation at the time? supra_aero
It says in the BBC news article unless I misinterpreted.
tbourner
Lui how would the lorry driver not notice he hit a car though?!?! It's not the same as hitting it, it was turned out so it would have been a gentle knock on the front (relative to hitting something at that speed), and the weight would have been very little in comparison to the truck. They would notice something was wrong but it wouldn't be immediate.

Still I'd have expected some feedback through the throttle/steering wheel etc.
Rob
That's scary Similar situation happened like that to my dad & mum about 12 years on the M25 they were both going to Brighton for day out my dad was in middle lane doing about 65 when a foreign lorry left hand drive next to him decided to pull in dad must of been in blind spot hit my dad swerve his car in front of lorry carried on for about 250m before stopping wrote my dads car off lucky no one was hurt was very scary for him he is always now very nervous on motorways with lorries next to him now !!! It happened to my parents and grandmother in a J reg Ford Escort on the upslope of the Dartford Bridge, exactly as the film of the Merc showed. My dad was hanging about just in front of truck, in the first lane (he was never one for rapid acceleration) and the truck moved over clipped the rear OS wing and shunted them sideways all the way up the bridge. The truck driver said he hadn't even noticed at first till he started labouring up the incline and heard the car beeping. The car was ok, because I actually bought it off them for some odd reason. When I PX'd it about 6months later, while driving to the dealers I noticed the OS doors had a different pattern fabric to the rest of the car. Matt H
Matt, not sure if you meant that literally but I would think the car will be pretty scratched up by it. The tyres will be goosed too. Don't know how you could think I was actually asking that question! I can't see how, for starters, the Clio would find itself wedged in that position, and secondly, how it could be in such good shape too. It's blatantly a viral. Bloody good one too mind. martini
What happens if the car went in front of the lorry at a very low speed, without him noticing and as he accelerated, he didn't realise. Reminds me of this case of the same thing happening to a kid in a wheelchair by an 18 wheeler. He was going across the road at a crossing when the lights changed, and the lorry hadn't seen him and set off, with him stuck in the front grille. The driver didn't believe the police until he came outside and saw it. Link. FWIW I think this is real. It's easy to not believe it but it could very well happen. More likely than the wheelchair IMO! Didn't you see my post earlier, I've actually seen this happen. I didn't see how the vehicle got in that position, but it was pushed along just like the one in the video. It was on the other carriageway on the motorway in the left lane. This is how it could happen, very little damage as they're both going the same speed V1LM8TtSLZ0
nick_karkie
I saw this happen in January on the M25 between upminster and lakeside. I heard the screeching and saw smoke just 500 yards on the distance on the opposite side of the motorway, a Clio (coincidence) wa stuck to the front bumper of the truck and it was still moving forward. I could see the couple inside, they didn't look terrified at all, just kind of surprised but really calm. There was a lot of smoke in the accident I saw. supra_aero
This seems to be a regular occurence on our roads then!
nevins
Not trying to upset people here but thats a load of crap. I drive hgv's and if a car was infront like that you would see it plain as day. Also the noise would be unbelievable. Due to the position you sit at when driving there is no way in hell that the driver would not have known, I agree with matt on this and say its a viral. With the accidents of late involving hgv the driver would be hung drawn and quartered for this.
optim8
This same thing happen to my mates Daughter. There was 5 on them heading to the airport on M25, and a left hooker lorry changed lanes clipping her at the back and spinning her on to the front of his truck. By the time they came to a stand still 3 of her tyres had come clean off the rims!! Not a good experience!
stevie_b
The car driver has come forward to the press: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_yorkshire/8579523.stm The 2nd video of the Merc vs the lorry shows how it *could* happen. The news article suggests this happened in a similar way: car was clipped gently into a T-bone position.

Ian C
I find it amusing that people are still calling "photoshop!" when all the evidence is in that it really happened. More tinfoil hats please. I assume the police are focussing on the more serious offence of the Clio driver using a phone while driving.
RiceRocket
In a bid to release her vehicle, she said she pulled on the handbrake and flashed her hazard lights to try to catch the driver's attention, as well as that of other road users, but she said it took the lorry driver nearly a minute to notice her. Umm why didn't you try this- http://s3.images.com/huge.62.310331.JPG

Heheh, actually the law states you can use a phone if you use it to phone 999 and it is dangerous for you to stop.

stevie_b
Pure speculation on my part, but I partly blame the car drivers for loitering in lorries' blind spots. Either move ahead of the blind spot or move behind, don't just sit there for a few minutes. Same goes for when a car comes alongside another car. Tricky to avoid when the roads are very busy though.
