RedM
http://www.onlive.com/ Basically they run the game on their monster pcs and stream the output to you. You play it 'remotely' with minimal lag and the added benefit of not needing the latest bleeding edge gfx cards etc. Looks interesting. Ric
only available in the US though, makes sense at least they have decent internet speeds
Jake
Decent connections are available here too. I'm quite happy with my 50 meg cable.
Smallshinyant
Lag is difficult to overcome, as even with uber power machines running and fiber to the door step, information still has to be sent and recieved. If our ISP's offered it as a service i believe it would be in with a good chance of being good. But if its just going to be routed through general internet traffic i think i will have to stick to s local gaming machine. Nice idea though. Homer
The company I work for is very much involved in 'live' streaming and offline processing... From the lab guys working on similar systems, it's only viable for single player games, lag being by far the largest restriction. Servers need to be located in a reasonably close location (a few hundred miles) of the user, otherwise switching and light speed delays make it unusable. For MMOG it's impossible unless audience is limited to those within close limits (kind of against the point of MMOG's in the first place). It'll only be workable if servers are available locally and real-time interaction is limited to those within acceptable lag times. There are a lot of benefits for the single player for those with shitty computers, but a lot of draw backs for MMOG's. For console fans, it won't make any difference in the next decade
Scott
Fantastic idea in theory. Would mean the TV would be able to do the works in future.... not that it won't anyway of course.
The-Plethora
Its an interesting idea, a set top box that never needs to be upgraded as the processing happens remotely, there is also talk that they are doing a PC based client that will run the software. Kinda cool being able to play the latest PC games in hi definition on a sub £200 netbook I think. I saw an interview a while back and they were saying a 2mb connection is the minimum supported but presumably with higher video compression the quality is worse. It the UK cable and ADSL networks that will decide the real fate of this though, until we get some real world testing its wait and see.
