Chris Wilson
My annual question, is anyone going to Crufts this year? Jane and I are there on Thursday, actually showing a dog in the ring rather than displaying her on Discover Breeds. God help us, she won a championship show and at the time entering her for Crufts seemed a good idea. As I haven't a clue on ring etiquette (or any other sort of etiquette most of the time) I am now getting cold feet. Should give some amusement to those watching I guess
Thorin
Should give some amusement to those watching I guess ...and that's the main reason I'm thinking of going, what day? Seriously though we may be going, not been for a few years and we missed you the last time we were there (you were probably in the bar). Chris Wilson
Tomorrow, Thursday, Anatolian Shepherd Dogs, not sure of hall and ring numbers, can check though, or, of course, in the bars.... WTF is an Anatolian Shepherd Dog? Also called the Anatolian Karabash http://www.justdogbreeds.com/anatolian-shepherd-dog.html or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPB3w7rw08c
Thorin
Ah no can't make tomorrow, missed that. Good luck though, is it back on TV this year? Your embarrassment may even be viewed by thousands of people! I'm not helping am I?
Chris Wilson
Never mind, we'll meet again as Vera used to say... Not sure if the BBC have relented and are covering it this year. Whatever happens though, I'll blame the dog!
tbourner
Good luck! We're not going, we heard you can't take your dog unless you're registered to show - which is a bit silly. Would be good if it was on TV. //edit: is this it: http://www.dfscrufts.tv/
Chris Wilson
AFAIK you never have been able to take a dog to most shows unless showing it, it would be chaos. Can you imagine the chavs with pit bull look alikes wandering around
tbourner
Good point. Still annoying though as we couldn't show Loki he'd cause chaos in the ring! What exhibit number are you? I think Mals are first in this year.
garethr
...Would be good if it was on TV... Crufts on More4 I wonder if they'll talk as much crap as the BBC commentators did EDIT: Oh, probably, just realised that Claire Balding is still involved. caseys
That bird that's presenting Crufts on More4 really does look like the female version of Eddie Izzard doesn't she? So anyone spotted Chris yet?
ivan
I see there have been more protests about Crufts then... http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/pets/news/crufts-opens-amid-controversey-1919993.html My Mum was a dog breeder for years. She got out because it all turned too political for her.
Thorin
So anyone spotted Chris yet? Unfortunately not, TV coverage was pretty poor. How did you do Chris?
Chris Wilson
Baschka got a reserve win for 4th place, which I was very pleased with, given the quality and size of the entries (several imports) and the fact neither of us knew what we were doing. 3 pints and a large G&T settled my nerves, the dog itself settled well after we got there early and let her acclimatise to the ascending noise and bustle. No real dramas, which is unusual for the Anatolians, save for one huge male that was lethal, and had to be sat on twice when in the ring as it decided the best way to win was to kill the opposition. I felt sure it would get marked down for temperament, but it won its class, and was duly returned to its cage on wheels to continue intimidating anything that walked by We had a great, but tiring day, not sure if I would do it again, but it was a unique experience and the dog and wife loved it. I could have liked it more save for a pint of lager at £3.60 and a large G&T at £6, plus Jane decided the dog's lead was shabby and wanted to get a kangaroo leather slip lead at 56 quid, but I negotiated down to a cowhide one at 29 notes. The place is real rip off if you want to buy anything, even worse than last year IMO. We didn't take a camera, but if I get hold of a photo I'll link to it. garethr
Quite a good documentary on More 4 last night. http://www.channel4.com/programmes/good-dog-bad-dog/4od#3048666 They don't seem to have the actual Crufts programmes available online, but the comments on Saturdays program are interesting. http://www.channel4.com/programmes/dfs-crufts-2010/episode-guide/series-1/episode-3 I saw the clip of the German Shepherd that won Best of Breed, and it looked crippled. The usual nonsense in the comments about the GSD being a "gaiting breed". WTF is that? I can never understand why dog breeders can't see that if their show dog looks completely different from the same breed when it was a working dog there must be something wrong. With that GSD winning BoB, and Chris's comments about one of the winning Anatolians, it seems that the Kennel Club haven't yet re-educated all their judges. The state of the GSD has been picked up be the mainstream media, though: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article7061828.ece EDIT: Found a (crap) video of the GSD TMjd1LlNJJ8
tbourner
Well Loki's brother came first in junior dog, and his sister was reserve yearling bitch, so I'm pleased he got good lines. I only watch it for flyball anyway.
Thorin
I only watch it for flyball anyway. Which is boring now with those new block things. Half the fun was seeing the dogs leap up in the air (and sometimes missing) to catch the ball.
