Remind yourself who you have

Well after Being up at 1am yesterday firing what I thought were undigested cherries out both ends it appears I have something a bit more seriously wrong with me and have possibly been bleeding internally since Tuesday ish.

Got admitted to hospital early last night after vomitting up a bit more blood. Supra was parked down a sideroad and a friend has kindly driven it home for me today.

Now in the hospital until Monday/Tuesday ish for observations, had usual blood tests, iv, xrays and waiting on an endoscopy to check I'm ok.

I just wanted to post up (and love the irony there's ready a healthy based thread today and already been a few already of late) that it's iterated to me once again that life is all about the people you have it, after the support I've had off my family and my missus (who is due to produce our first child in 6 weeks) has and is staggering to me. It's also driven home that i have people I am responsible for and shortly will do for the rest of my life and how i should be adjusting to that

So I just wanted to remind people, be thankful of who you've got in life and never take them or your health for granted as both can equally be taken away in a moment. If you think lifes crap because you're broke or your cars broken take a step back and reaccess. Family, people, health and your ability to provide for the people you're responsible to are all that ever truly matter

I hope this finds you all in good health.

Simon

True words.

This is why sometimes people on the internet do make me chuckle at how seriously they take the whole WWW experience.

If your mindset is in the correct frame (as of OP) then opinions of most on the WWW matters not.

I mean what next?... Someone suggesting people donating to a Supra charity, where they build someone a single Supra because.. Oh.

Or someone wanting to get a Supra tat... Oh.. :(

All the best with your health Simon. Chin up lad.

Thanks for all the kind words chaps!

Seems I had/have a stomach ulcer (rare at 28) and lost 4 units of blood by it. Seeing a specialist about it today and means a course of drugs but hopefully discharged today and eventual return to full fitness if they can kill it.

Hopefully this doesn't mean the end to me eating curries :D I could murder one right now at 7 in the morning, admittedly that's after 3 days of hospital food and a 30+ hour nil by mouth stint.

  • 4 months later...

Having been reminded about this thread with the energy drinks thread....

Was in Hospital last monday for my checkup Gastroscopy (linky) I have been given the all-clear that my ulcer has actually gone (thanks to medical science).

Only 8 years ago this ulcer would eventually have been the *death* of me... imagine knowing that at 29?.

Still not a pleasant procedure, you get your throat numbed with spray, have the option of being sedated then basically they put a 3 foot flexi tube down your throat with a fibre optic camera and also a set of pincers to check out your ulcer. Then they biopsy your stomach and take a sample to check if you're still got the bacteria in your stomach which causes the ulcers.

End of the week I'll know if it's all cleared up and I'm back to normal (albeit with no explaination of *why* it happened). The people that found out what causes ulcers - a certain bacteria have won the nobel prize for creating meds which kill it (but they don't know what creates it).

Caffiene, alcohol, smoking, high-fat foods... take all in moderation. I also now can never take asprin / ibruprofen for the rest of my life.

Luckily I can still eat curry :)

Very sad story Caseys but with a happy ending.

I had similar health issues (not as bad as yours though!!) for a guy who was 26. I didn't get why, and I realised all the uni boozing etc. had caught up with me even though I thought I was a healthy person.

Changed my lifestyle right around and get tons of fruit and veg and seeds in daily and swear by the super health conscious diet/lifestyle at least sun-thurs. Fri and Sat are still my cheat days though.

Glad to hear you are much better now.

Weird, I am the same age as you as I had exactly the same thing! Although mine was a bit more serious they had to get an ambulance for me :p Wasn't pleasant for first few days but like you it's over now although I have to watch my diet and how much I drink.

The endoscopy thing wasn't too pleasant either

Anyhow, glad to hear you are doing well :)

Contrary to myth, stomuch ulceration is caused by a virus called Heliobacter Pyloris, and can actually strike at any age.

Being 28 and having an ulcer is not that rare, my mate started suffering at 22.

I assume your doc has advised you that abuse will make it bite you in the arse. You can never be fully cured of stomach ulceration as there will always be a weak spot where it was.

Glad you are better. Did you take the very strong antibiotics for a month and no beer cure?

Endoscopy's are the spawn of satan, until you try the sedation. That was a breeze :)

Glad to hear you've got it all sorted now. It's a worrying time going through the diagnosis.

My initial try was with sedation and it was unpleasant. The one last week I decided to MTFU and have it without sedation, can actually say it was easier not being sedated.

Well I hardly drink or eat spicy food and never even smoked a cigarette in my life, so I believe if anything it was the energy drinks.

When I was discharged I was on antibiotics and suppressants, basically taking 12 pills a day for the first month then just one omeprazole a day after that. Yep I'm kinda well versed now on H. Pyloris and waiting for the bacteria test back. Yep I could be slightly more prone to them than others but they can actually eradicate it with omeprazole now. Still, not touched an energy drink since I went in hospital, nor a single dram of alcohol. Have had 4 curries though.

They are checking for thE bacteria but results take ten days. Then I either have to up the omeprazole or that's it... Done and dusted.

This and having a baby have really helped my outlook on life. Nothing like nearly dying to make you appreciate being alive every day. I'd rather be tired or sober with a smile rather than not be around for the people i love. It's a small small price to pay, giving up your vices.

Wierd... With sedation, I got the jab and was out within 10 secs. Came to in recovery just after it was over, don't remember a thing about it. What was so unpleasant with yours?

Sedation at least at my hospital didn't knock you out, just made you very woozy but still aware of this tube being rammed down your throat.

I believe at least in Bournemouth you're only knocked out if it's completely necessary.
