heavy power steering

just got back from being away for my 2 weeks at work and have noticed a change in my steerig. it feels heavy when turning at low speeds and when coming away from junctions/roundabouts, theres also times of it feeling heavy when im overtaking other vehicles aswell at high speeds. ive checked the power steering fluid and its fine, theres no noise at all which would of helped me try to identify this problem. my car is a 95 n/a auto. is there anything i can do to check or anyone got any ideas what it could be??

It could be your power steering pump...? I had mine go a couple of years back and had it replaced.

yeah that was my first thought, are they easy to replace?

Change the PS fluid would be my first choice.

is there any specific type of pf fluid to use on the supe? how do i drain the pump?

One of my 1jz's has no steering assist at all. The pump doesn't seem to be pushing the fluid 'round the system. (no swirl in the reservoir) Could this be the relief valve stuck open?

could this be the problem on mine aswell?

Do a Tipex test on the crank damper pulley, it may well be slipping.

how do i do that? and where do i find the crank damper pulley?

It's going round bud. As is the a/c, alt and water.

Would the relief valve cause this symptom?

It's the outer ring on the crank pulley. They sometimes slip around the center hub when the layer of rubber comes unstuck. Basically put a line of tippex across the inner and outer and see if they go out of alignment when the engine's running.

My guess is it is the electric plug down beside the air filter. If that isn't connected the steering goes into its motorway cruise weight. I had this problem a few months ago. I'm surprised noone has mentioned it yet ;)

When it is connected it the speed of the car is measured and the steering weight is adjusted accordingly. When disconnected it defaults into minimum assist, making it a fair bit heavier.

Do you mean the solenoid on the rotary valve?

Checked that too. I'm just gonna take the pump off and check the relief valve. The things going round and it's not noisy. I've bled it and when you turn the wheel side to side the fluid swirls in the reservoir but no assistance from the pump. It's like the vanes aren't sliding out on the pump wheel. Really weird. :(
