TV- Wonders Of The Solar System

Just wondering from this thread - how many people on here have a telescope (or two) and make use of it.

Thinking this as I spent about forty minutes last night standing in the freezing cold looking at Saturn and Mars through my 6 inch Celestron.

Must say, everytime I get my first look at Saturn when it comes back into the night sky is always a WOW moment for me, no matter how many times I have seen it before.

Certainly a wonder of the solar system.

To answer the first part of your question, Ed has one. But after a short spell in prison and a swift move away from the ladies dorm, he promised not to do it again.

It is something I will be considering. I've enjoyed using my camera @ 18x zoom to capture the moon - but it's hardly the same I'd imagine as using a proper scope :)

Ta for the heads up RR

I'm really looking forward to this. Prof Brian Cox is so compelling to watch, his enthusiasm and passion about his subject is a joy.

He still creeps me out a bit though.

Plus he used to be in D: Ream :D

Looking forward to this too, compelling and mind boggling in the same breath.

Can you not use BBC iPlayer?

Unfortunately not. The BBC now stop anyone outside the UK from viewing. :(

I am led to believe that the only way around this would be to use a proxy server in the UK to mask my Greek IP address.

Nothing against you my friend, bit it is about time that the BBC closed the i-player loop hole, seeing as UK residents have to pay a licence fee to watch BBC content, and for quite some time those living overseas didn't.

or just download them. Are you using newsgroups or torrents as they will be on both.

I just downloaded a few bbc horizon episodes about space and time etc and was a good watch.

I use both and so that would seem to be the best option. My only problem is sometimes finding the programs but I think that is more a case of me being crap and at searching :)

And yes, Coxy is just a bit creepy lol

He's just enthusiastic :D Very clever bloke who brings a bit of 'life' a program that could be a bit dull.

If you are into this sort of thing, take a look at some of his lectures on youtube. He takes some of the more complex astro-physics questions and explains them in terms that anyone with half a brain can understand.

Well worth a watch chaps. The aurora, whenever I see it it looks like its been CGI'd or sped up, has anyone actually witnessed it? Id love to.

Yep.

They are awesome. Funny my wife and I both said that although the sequence on TV was stunning, you truely have to see them in real life to appreciate them. But he was spot on, they are like curtains of light swaying on an invisible breeze and it does look like they jump up.

great programme! Im amazed by all things to do with our solar system and the galaxy. I wonder how many millions of similiar solar systems there are out there teeming with life

Millions, theres greater civillisations out there that have lived and died in the time before we came along. All in IMO of course

Agreed, its nice to see someone so into their subject matter.... shame the producers felt the need to add Oasis to make him look young and trendy. lol.
