pistonbroke
Two days ago, my dog was downstairs in his bed, I ran upstairs to take an urgent piss when I heard him yelp. I went downstairs to find him lying in the middle of the living room with a sorry look on his face and shaking. I couldn't work out what he'd done, so put it down to maybe stepping on one of my sons toys. Since then, whenever he gets up from lying down and goes to stretch where he pushed his front legs out in front with his butt in the air, he yelps before he gets half way down. He also squeaks as he runs up the stairs now, but not down them. Yesterday he went out to greet the postman and put his two front paws on the 3ft wall as he does, he yelped straight away and came running back into the house. He still wants to go out for walks, but I've been keeping him on the lead to stop him over exerting himself, he doesn't limp or favour any foot. He's not off his food, so I'm convicned he's either pulled/strained a muscle, or worse, he's injured his back. When he's lying down relaxed, I've stretched each leg out gently to it's full extent and he's not made any noise, he pulls back with his legs, but I'm sure he's always done that. He's a dalmation rotweiller cross, 6 years old. Here he is with a "please help me get better face"
caliAl
If I were you I'd just get him down the vets ASAP. Doubt anyone could diagnose him over the internet
caseys
Just asking my friend who's GF is a full time vet up north. Will get back to you with any info if I get it.
caseys
Friend said that potentially your dog has eaten a squeaky toy and it's causing compression internally. The wall bit could be discomfort. Think you need to get him seen somewhere!
mr lover
Hip dysplasia, I'm not a vet but my rotty did suffer from this, sounds similar to your description http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_dysplasia_(canine)
Steviekid
Friend said that potentially your dog has eaten a squeaky toy and it's causing compression internally. The wall bit could be discomfort. Highly unlikely. Eating a foreign body wouldn't cause the dog to suddenly yelp in pain and there'd almost certainly be vomiting. Hip dysplasia is a slow onset condition so is also very unlikely. My bet would be a back or spinal injury from landing badly when jumping off the cough or twisting etc. If he's getting around fine it's probably nothing serious. Get him checked out but some anti-inflammatories and rest could well sort it out.
pistonbroke
Thanks for the replies everyone. I don't want to take him to the vets unless absolutley necessary. He hates the place and goes a bit mental (last time he went he had to have a toe amputated, and I still don't think he's forgiven me fully). I doubt it's anything he's eaten as he's still eating everything that's put in front of him. As for his flexibility, he's just been licking his balls and ass for the past 10 minutes, so he's obviously not in pain when he's bent round almost 180 degrees. I've also just returned home from a mates house and he jumped up to greet me, I expected him to yelp but he didn't. I'll keep him well rested for a few days and see how it goes. Thanks again. Never owned a dog myself but logically it made sense to me.
