Digsy
Having just moved to ADSL I'm having a revamp of all things internet-related on my PC. One of these is moving from a little-known e-mail client (legacy from when I first signed up for dialup many years ago) to Outlook (2003 I think). I have a few different e-mail accounts which I use for different stuff, and "never the twain shall meet" if you see what I mean. I.e. I have a "private" spam-free e-mail address and another which I use on public forums like this one. Using my old mail client these were all physically different accounts with different logins and different profiles for sending and receiving mail. What I want to do now is bring these all together under one roof, but still maintain their individuality. This is how far I have got: I have set up the mail accounts for each "identity". I have created a unique Outlook data file for each identity. I have made a rule for each idenrtity that moves mail from the general Inbox into the proper personal folder, depending upon which account the mail was recieved from. All this works so far. Now what I want to do is work out how I can send e-mails using these different identities. My main "isp" account is currently set as the default account. I believe that if I reply to a message received through "myotheridentity" it will use the settings from my isp account, thus exposing my isp e-mail address. So question one is: How can I choose which identity is used use when composing and sending mail, or even can this be automated? i.e. When replying to a mail recieved through myotheridentity, it automatically uses the details from that account? Outlook lets you set up a different "Reply to" address for each account, so it makes sense that somewhere there is a setting to force that address into a new e-mail. Hope that makes sense. When that is working, I will want to set up another rule that moves sent mail into different folders, according to which identity it was sent from. Is this possible? I havn't had much experience with Outlook (I use Exchange at work). Under Exchange you can set up rules for mail you receive but not (as far as I can see) for mail that you send. TIA. Digsy
Follow-up: I've just been doing some searching on the interweb and found that Outlook Express had something called "switch identities", which you could do within one session. Apparently Outlook has replaced this option with multiple identities (setup from within Control Panel) and you can choose which one you want to use on startup. This will not do what I want. I want to run a single setup with all my contained within it, and choose which one I use when I compose mail (unless of coruse it can be automated as I said above). Basically, if anyone is familiar with Pocket Outlook, I something close to the same setup as I have on my PDA. Each mail account sits in its own folder under "Messaging". When you hit "new message" it uses the settings from whichever folder you have selected.
eyefi
on a new mail window there is a "from" drawer (at the top above the "to" recipients) that has all your identities in it. mine defaults to the addy it was taken from, mail sent to me from email addy A will automatically be replyed from addy A. but, my old isp's will no longer allow mail sending because i no longer dial up through them and my current isp will not allow mail forwarding through them (using their servers to fwd the outgoing mail to the other isp's mail server). this is where imap and hotmail accounts can be useful. yes you can move sent mail into specific places. eyefi
you want to setup just one identity for you and then within that identity you setup multiple accounts. like you say identities won't do what you want but multiple accounts within that identity will
Digsy
Hmmm. Annoyingly I cannot download that attachment Ok, I can't remember seeing that option when I composed a mail last night but I know what you mean because I've seen something similar it on different mail clients. Is there an option to turn it on and off? If it's automated for replying then that will be great It looks like just by luck I've been setting things up correctly: One identity containing several e-mail accounts. I'll have another play tonight. Cheers!
carl0s
you should find that the 'Send' button has an arrow on the right-edge which allows you to choose which account the message is sent via. The From box is usually used for send-on-behalf of.
Digsy
Cheers Carlos. My web serach also turned up a factette that using Word as your default mail editor may confuse things as some of the available options are different. I know I am using Word at the moment. Hopefully when I turn this "feature" off all will become clear!
