JS2004
This turned into a bit of a fitness thread lol Did anyone actually watch the show though - it was highlighting that you can have good intentions to lead a healthy lifestyle and go out of your way to buy healthy food - but still end up with stuff thats loaded with sugar. The female presenter showed ingredients for a chicken curry with brown rice, but the sauce had like 40 grams of sugar in it!! Most people would consider boiling rice, thinly slicing up chicken, chopping up a few vegetables and then cooking it in sauce from a jar to be "cooking".. but its not as they didnt make the sauce themselves - but then again to make the sauce most people either wouldnt bother, or wouldnt know how. Last time I did some proper cooking (I do love cooking though) I made some cod and prawn thai fish cakes with a cucumber & Chillie relish, and a dark chocolate torte for afters with baileys cream - was very nice but the ingredients cost almost double than what id have spent if I bought the pre-made stuff or went to the takeaway. Add to that all the pots, prep time etc.. its easy to see how and why people would take the easier and less expensive route. The presenter weighed up all the sugar in what she considered as healthy food for a day - included beans on toast, healthy cereal, cereal bar, cranberry juice and the curry mentioned above and she was taking in more than double the recommended amount of sugar - and those food choices seemed "sensible". Additionally when she went into the supermarkets to check what healthy food options they had on offer it was isle after isle of buy one get one free on cakes, chocolates etc, and the amount of healthy option special offers was a small proportion compared to the unhealthy, sugar loaded offers the store had. So perhaps its not just the persons fault - supermarkets have a role to play, government should have a role to play (letting a burger king in an NHS hospital is pure stupidity). tbourner
Maybe they should add a 'fat tax' on foods, so anything with the labels in green is OK, if they're yellow they get 2% added for each section that's yellow, and red gets 5% for each section! So a £2 sandwich with yellow sugar and salt and red fat would cost £2.18. That would get people looking at what they're buying a bit more!! Unfortunately these programs tend to focus on one point, like sugar, and ignore all other improtant factors in health like your lifestyle and how much water you drink. Anyone watch Horizon last night?

Anyone watch Horizon last night? This traffic light idea to mark "healthier foods" was rejected by the supermarkets. Someone obviously will need to enforce it, are we suggesting that it be the Govt. Thought the overwhelming majority on here said that it was our responsibility and nothing to do with the supermarkets or Govt.

Awaits someone who'll make an iphone app which allows you to scan the barcode and it'll give a traffic light re: good or bad food.
tbourner
Thought the overwhelming majority on here said that it was our responsibility and nothing to do with the supermarkets or Govt. It is, but that was linked to the Horizon thing, they were saying eating meat and cooking food is what caused our evolutionary jump, but the taste for cooked food is also what is now causing our obesity. So it is our responsibility but we're obviously not responsible enough so we might need some help to push us along.
imi
Taste of cooked food = cause of obesity Hmm - bizarre link there....will try and watch the program and see how they justify the link.

I don't think it was specifically cooked food, but we got a taste for yummy food after we first started cooking it, and that resulted in where we are now. JS2004
It is our responsibility yes but the program was highlighting that its not as easy as people make it out to be - the example was the curry that by most peoples standards was a healthy meal - but on closer inspection was loaded with sugar Additionally those "healthy option" foods and the cunning labelling doesnt help people unless they check the small print. I think an example was the nutritional info printed on a choccie bar being for only half the bar, so it didnt look as bad. And those healthy option cereals that have similar amounts of sugar etc as the ones not branded healthy. You think your doing a good job (Marketing is working) but actually its not as good as you think. That Horizon program was interesting - by cooking things we increase the amount of energy we can get from it. Programs like that get you thinking. Just glad I enjoy cooking everything from scratch and making all my own sauces most of the time even though it can be a pain sometimes when all you wanna do is collapse on the couch after work. I thought it was famously unhealthy... or at least I have always thought it was.
