Who made me fat - BBC1

Anyone watch this?

Rather alarming how much sugar is in the food, and the way things are marketed etc to hide it!!

I could not believe the shots of fast food restaraunts like Burger King *Inside* the hospitals that deal with heart disease, and similar illnesses caused by obesity!

I love the way people who are supposed to be looking after the nations health avoid being questioned on camera too. No-one ever seems to be in the office when the BBC calls for an interview.

It said that the government is spending £75 million over the next few years on these healthy living campaigns (Change 4 Life).. yet they allow fast food chains into our hospitals..insane.

NHS proudly sponsored by Burger King..what lol.

lol there was a programme on the other day about salt in our food, and a salad, and a bowl of soup at a swanky london cafe had more salt in it than a big mac, so unless you cook your own food i dont think youll ever know the levels of salt and sugar and other additives we are misguided to eat

We do cook things ourselves, but generally only at weekends when we've got time. It's nothing to do with not wanting to learn it's to do with not having spare time in the evening to prepare everything. When we get in from work it's so simple to grab something out the freezer and stick it in the oven - I get people saying we should put a slow cooker on in the morning and it's ready when we get home - but when can you prepare it all!!

Buy raw food and learn how to cook - that's only solution ... and a lot of fun too!

"Who made me fat? - me myself by stuffing all the crap into my own mouth! "

Quoted for truth!

Cooking really isn't that hard and there really isn't that much preparation involved in making yourself a tasty nutritious meal; it's essentially the same amount of time as getting something out of the freezer and heating it up!

Whilst i agree that cooking for yourself is the best option it isnt always as easy as it sounds.

Between May 1st and October 31st I work 7 nights a week from 17.00 until 2.00. During the hours of 10.00 until 17.00 (my not sleeping time), the heat is such that you really don't want to be eating a hot meal and so for me, cooking something healthy and hot (salad is good but can be a bit boring if eaten on a repetitive basis) is not an easy option.

I know my lifestyle is not normal but I wanted to highlight that not everyone has the same choice.

Geo sorted me out with a great base diet. I had a quick read of it and have made my own up from the basic plan.

I don't see how hard it is to boil some fresh pasta or microwave a sweet potato/jacket potato, and grill some chicken or fish, whilst boiling some veg. In about 15 minutes from starting cooking I am eating.

thanks again, Geo.

The question is - whos responsibility is it?

Is it ours?

The supermarkets?

The Govt?

Or all the above - then the question is - what is the extent of their responsibilities?

How come in Europe most of these american brands are not even available in supermarkets - is their food control more stringent that ours?

Responsibilty lies with us, nothing to do with Goverments Supermarkets, if we just got off our fat lazy asses and cooked fresh, the nation would be alot healthier and not costing the HNS millions.

Cook meals the night before and take to work, its cheaper, healthier as you know what your putting in it, NO CRAP!!

Its easy. :D

I prepare all of my meals the night before.

It takes me about 1/2 hour (including cooking time) and it means I am able to ensure I have the correct proportion of macro-nutrients in each meal and around my gym times.

I agree, at first, I thought it was hard work but after a few days you just get used to it and realise how beneficial it is to do it.

even if people work nights, there will a time during the day when you are generally sitting down doing nothing. No-one is active for 24 hours non-stop.

Use this time to prepare a few meals for the next 24 hours.

The diet plans that I give to my clients to use all involve preperation and they soon see the benefits from it.

How far do you go though? We do jacket spuds, pasta bake, spag bol, various other pasta things (tuna neapolitana being a fave), toad in the hole and veg.

But we don't make it all ourselves, we buy jars of bol sauce and pasta bake sauce, we buy frozen toad in the hole, and frozen veg (which is healthier than fresh!). Is that what you mean when you say cook yourself? Or do you lot make your own bol sauces? Buy all the veg seperate and fresh? What do you mean by ready meals?

I typically don't make things with sauces and keep my carbs quite low/only have complex (brown) ones (I'm trying to lose some fat and gain some muscle).

I suppose you could say I have quite bland meals, but I'm very used to them now and they really aren't as bland as they are when you go from having really rich food.

For example; tonight I will have:

200g chicken breast (stir fry)

10 mushrooms (stir fry)

8 pieces of asparagus (boiled)

1 leek (boiled)

a few florets of broccoli (boiled) - steaming is best!

fresh udon noodles (boiled).

It takes 5 minutes to chop and about 10 to cook it all. I might have a splash of soy sauce if I want a bit of zing.

Nando's is great. Half a grilled chicken and some sweet potato mash - one of mine and the miss' favourite eateries!

Then half a ton of salt and sugar for 'seasoning'? ;)

I never put any seasoning in my dinners, as if you want some salt, stick a bit on afterwards.

I used to rely on microwave meals, but I cook fresh meals everyday, and some meals I make enough to freeze to have at other times. I'm thoroughly hating enjoying it, and know it's doing me good, as I'd only be on here or watching tv otherwise! :)

Which is why I asked, as that seems extreme to me. To me as long as we don't buy the "Chicken Korma with Rice" - [Microwave on full power for 3min] things then we're doing OK. I'm not trying to do anything special with my body except lose a stone (which I need exercise more than a change of diet for). We see ourselves as cooking food now albeit using sauce jars and stuff, but at least it's not what we would call ready meals/TV dinners.
