hi guys , just got my pc back from the shop , a virus got in last week and screwed it up , been using avast for a while from recommendations here , thanks for the past info .

question i have as it came at a real inappropriate time last week as i was in the middle of a few deals , i know the avast is free , but what extra protection does say something costing £30+ give me over what i had ? also having deleted norton as it didnt like my pc and seems to be a typical fault .

any info appreciated on companies recommended .

thanks peter

I'd recommend you install MalwareBytes (free) and F-Secure Internet Security 2010 (costs less than £30).

F-Secure gives you AV/Firewall/Browsing Protection/Email Filtering, and Malwarebytes can be ran manually whenever you want to (it checks for rootkits and other malicious trojans).

I use NOD32 from Eset and as far as I'm aware, it does the job very well. What are other peoples opinions on NOD32?

To be honest most virus protection can be done from carefull choice of internet browser. i.e. Firefox. not downloading things from web sites you dont trust and certainly never opening attchements from emails you were not expecting.

if you follow that you should only need minimal anti virus protection.

nah cause there is always exploits to be used windows 7 had a major flaw when they first brought that out that would be scanned for and exploited with a file being uploaded so its best to be prepared with a good antivirus

AVG + Malwarebytes + Microsoft have their own free antivirus tools they don't seem to announce actively to the world :-) There is something to be said for cautious browsing and email activity - I am paranoid personally and 9 times out of 10 can spot dodgey emails by their subject and "from" details. If you absolutely must perform high risk activity, why not try using a virtual instance of Windows XP or a Linux variant to do the dirty work using Sun's Virtual Box.

Avast and a Router with the security properly enabled is my choice. I have windows firewall on as well, simply because it doesn't bother me. A modern OS will help too. I use Windows 7 X64, it is a pretty good OS IMO.

You need to be careful with your browsing and emails though, I have never had a virus alert without doing something where I expected to see an alert.

Used NOD32 for a while..switched to their 'Smart Security Suit' when they brought it out..never had a single problem in 5+ years..good for gaming too (when I used too..)

As previously mentioned..vigilance and just being careful help so much too.
