dil
what a terrible start to a horrible morning, Jumped in the car this morning, turned the key and all i could I hear from under the bonnet was rapid clicking noise's , I can't see from where its coming from until I get someone to turn the key for me. I quickly checked the battery and that seems fine, it started perfectly fine last night at work, so there where no signs that i can think of that some thing wrong was about to happen, what do you guys reckon it could be? all help greatly appreciated

Guest Martin F
It's the battery.
dil
Popped of to home at lunch, the battery had been on charge, looked at the charger indicator reads fully charged and had switched into trickle charge mode. Turned the ignition and still getting that rapid clicking noise from under the bonnet, I don't think its the battery, possibly a relay, any body know of any in the engine bay that would influence start up ,and where it/they are located? cheers
Branners
loose battery connection? Try wiggling the battery connectors about a bit. JB
Matt Harwood
Agreeing with everybody else. It'll almost certainly be the battery or the battery connections. If the battery can't take a charge, the charger will switch to trickle charge anyway.
Supra_Al
My guess it's the starter motor solenoid clicking,if you've checked the battery and connections.Starter motor may be sticking, get someone to turn the key while you 'tap' the starter motor.Could be the conections to the solenoid on the starter, try this first! Supra_Al
If the battery is still suspect, with the ignition ON ,turn your interior light on and flash your full beam.If indeed your battery is that low, then as you flash your full beam then the interior light will 'dim' drastically. dil
just been in the garage, WD40 just about anything i could find, checked all connections, turned the key same loud clicking noise, its coming from the back of the engine, the old man (you can always rely on the old man for advice) thinks maybe the fly wheel is stuck, does this sound plausible?he's had me pushing the car back & forth in gear for the last 20mins, am I flogging a dead horse there? tried suggestion about hitting started motor, that didn't resolve anything and did the full beam test , the interior lights dimmed but not a huge amount that it went dark?Keeping them ideas coming super Al, will try jump starter from another car in awhile any other ideas guys? or isit a job for the rac
Alex
Could it be the crank position sensor???
Matt Harwood
Naah, the car would still turn over. Dil, stick another battery on the car before you try anything else. The clicking sound is almost certainly the starter solenoid engaging then dropping off because the battery cant provide enough current to engage the starter motor. You may have enough voltage/current to power the lights but they will only require about 10-20 amps max. The starter will be in the hundreds! Borrow a battery from another car iff possible. Jump starting isn't ideal.
Barry
Sounds like the starter motor solenoid is sticking.
Gordon F
Sounds like the battery to me......first bit of cold weather normally shows up any suspect ones! A variation on Al's theme.......ignition on, headlights on, turn the key to start. If the headlights dim massively your battery is finished. May also be worth checking any starter / engine earth leads
dil
Ok i'm going to do a half day at work tomorrow, and have bloody good crack at the car to see if i can figure out whats going on in the afternoon, thanks for your words of wisdoms if anyone thinks of anything else please post it , Hopefully I wont need to post on this thread again after tomorrow:D cheers
IceMan
I had something like that after I had an alarm fitted badly - disabled the immobiliser badly and the fuses kept blowing in the engine leading to no starts... in the end it transpired the useless alarm company had fitted the alarm wires THE WRONG WAY AROUND ("they're both black and I got confused"!). When that was sorted (and after a few more fuses) it was fine. Check the fuses just in case. Ice
Darren
I have had this problem on my landcruiser three times! once it was the starter gone, another time batteries and finally loose connection on the batteries so think I agree with everyone else! Ian C
Another way to test the power of your battery is to try the windscreen wipers. A duff battery will make the wipers crawl sadly across the screen. Could be an earth fault - are there any other odd behaviour signs, like dimly glowing dash warning lights? Have you got a multimeter? You could check the voltage going to the starter motor. Check the voltage across the battery terminals as well, should be about 13.5v. Check the earth points in the engine bay. The electrical diagrams are on MKIV.com, they show you where the points are. Before going mad with the electrics, though, do check the battery voltage. Check it's fluid levels as well. The clicking solenoid is either insufficient power or a jammed starter. -Ian
Matt Harwood
Dil, how did you get on?
dil
Sorted it this morning, took the battery out of the golf, connected it all up, and the car started:) luckly i still had the recipt for the battery i purchased this time last year from toyota, so took it back told them the problem, they're getting me in a new battery for tuesday. Word of warning though, the battery cost me £70 last year, and at the time they told me it came with a three year warranty, when I took it back today they told me as the battery was more than year old I would have to pay 50% of the replacement cost and if It was more than 2 yrs old I would have to pay 75% of the replacement costs, obviously I argued with them that this is false selling by saying it comes with a 3 year warranty (is warranty the same as gaurantee?) if In the end I have to pay money for replacement, they agreed and are replacing it at no cost, but only cos I pointed out the battery was only a couple weeks older than a year............... is there anything when dealing with toyota simple. any how all seems sorted, and thanks for your help:thumbs: by the way the rating on the battery thats nackered is 500 Amps is that big enough for a supra & did the car nacker the battery cos it was too small? thanks again:thumbs:
Barry
I brought a new battery for my soop a couple of months back, heavy duty job... £30. Helps to have friends in the business.!
Matt Harwood
500 amps should be fine. If you do need to pay anything for a new one tell 'em to shove it. Shop around and you can get a better battery for much less. Like Barry, I got a 640 amp for £35 last week - Complete with 3 year guarentee, (I didn't question it:rolleyes:)

dil
Al you read my mind , Matt where can I get 640 AMP battery for £35? it might be worth getting a bigger battery thinking ahead to any future Ice installs, and keeping the new toyota one for running out door christmas lights:cool:
Matt Harwood
I got mine from a tyre and exhaust company. I do get trade discount, which helps Just shop around a bit. Barry got his for £30!
