OK, out of no where this problem has popped up, first it started as a noise only when started up first, like a low fluid sound. Now it has developed into alot louder sound, when i start up i have no p/s at all, when i drive the noise comes in with slightest turn of wheel, and i think even when ticking over, and not moving wheel there is slight noise present in pump.. there is fluid in it.. i think the p/s works a bit better when hot.. any ideas? this has popped up and developed over space of a week:(

Hi lads,

i weeded through some old posts and found a couple about a gauze filter at bottom of resevoir being clogged up, so i stuck screwdriver down gentle and gave it a bit of a scrape around and there was gunk on it, the steering seems to be working now and little or no noise, so think i will remove and clean and replace fluid and see what that does.

Next question, whats the best way to drain system without getting fluid e very where? how much fluid will it take and what type????

Thank in Advance.

I had a similar problem with mine (albeit not as bad as you describe) - I simply asked the mechanic to change the fluid and all seems fine now.

sometimes it is worth trying to fix the issue by basic troubleshooting first before ripping it out and replacing it - which a lot of people seem too keen on.

I've always had a bit of a whine with my PS pumps on both my Supra's when their cold always thought they were on their way out but still going....

The PS shouldn't whine even when cold. The PS fluid when cold is probably struggling to get through the filter. The problem eases when the fluid is thinner (when warm), so the noise decreases. Check/clean the filter.
