dr_jekyll
this is more of a pipe dream i have allways had and is never likely to become a reality but i thaught id share. ever since i was young i have dreamed of bulding my own sports car. it would have to be a real le mans stly low, wide beast to look at. mid engined 2 seater rwd . with a space frame chassis and a fiberglass body. i even designed it when i was in a part time collage designe course. sometimes i think i could do it , i mean why not. i can weld and fabricate. i can fiberglass and make muolds but then other times i see it from the other point of veiw, ther so much i dont know about engineering , sillythings like spring rates mached to dampers and the weight of the car. but still one day i hope i can afford the material and have the knowlage to have a go at it. has anybody els ever had thaughts like this, or even built there own car? id love to hear about it if you have or have any pics. thanks for sharing this emotional moment with me much love the dr . RobSheffield
Why dont you build a kit car and see how you like it. You could learn quite a bit Friend of mine wanted to do the same and used to sketch it quite often, still hasnt done it yet!
dr_jekyll
lol same as me,everytimeim sat infront of paper with a pen i sketch a different angle of it and write sill stats and figures id like it to have . a kit car is a good idea and somthing i will definatley do one day , cash and time allowing. who knows maybe it will give me the confidence to attack the dream one day
liam1
i've always wanted to build a kit car, one of the first model cars i ever had was a lancia stratos its remained one of favourite cars ever since, after watching the replica on top gear i thought one day (when i have a garage) im going to do it. kjgreen3
If you want go down the 'sports car' building route then a tried and tested kit car is your best bet. When car companies spend 100's of millions on designing, researching and testing a new vehicle you can see it isn't easy doing one from scratch. A slightly cheaper but more of a 'hands on' option is maybe going down the off-roader route. Get a landrover or range rover chassis, A nice rover V8 and gearbox and you can customise the bodywork, suspension and brakes etc. Makes it more your own but at least the important components have been tested in the real world first so safety is improved. Me and my dad have built a fair few off roaders this way. A defender shell with range rover chassis and a nice jag V12 shoe-horned in for good measure was my favourite. Although we did buy a bowler tomcat and put a 6.2 V8 2 stroke diesel in as an experiment. No decent top end but the low down torque was impressive no way you could stall that engine! AlexM
I've never wanted to build a car from scratch (good luck if you decide to go down that route), but if I ever get the opportunity I'm going to build an Ultima GTR.
dr_jekyll
i wouldnt mind buying a ffr gtm in kit form and building that. 4x4s are not really my thing but i lie the concept.

Guest gothy
I say go for it, And with a simple conversion you could throw a bike engine in it. I just happen to have a 900cc bike engine lying around if anyone was realistically going to build one. I've wanted to put the engine in a classic mini, it would be a right laugh
Rob_Mitchell
my dad is was doing a jaguar e-type but sort of lost a bit of interest now its just sitting here at work lol been off the road for like 26 years, seems a shame but being in the trade its hard to motivate yourself to carry on with a project after work hours. engine any gear box is all in just minor little things need doing. thebluefox
I'd love to build a kit AC Cobra, I love new shiny bits for cars, so a whole new shiny car would be amazing! One thing that puts me off working in mine is its full of dirt and grease of the last 16 years. And its winter at the minute too....its cold!
