Shamu Kills trainer

Constant temperature controlled water, large amount of water area to swim in, top team of experts looking after health and feeding needs.

Not quite the same is being in a natural habitat and using their basic hunting instincts is it

Now, I know they are still in captivity but as far as it goes, it is not a bad gig.

You said it yourself. They are in captivity. Enough said.

When you think about the number of locations around the world where this type of show takes place, the numbers of different people and whales involved, the number of shows per day that take place and the number of days in a year the show happens, I don't think it is just by luck that the number of deaths of trainers by the whales is very low.

Read your statement again and you may realise why people disagree with the whole situation.

Proportionately, we are probably more at risk of dying behind the wheel of a Supra than the trainers are of being killed by the whales.

slightly different scenario I think.

And I must say, my thoughts are with Dawn Brancheau and her family. She probably died doing something she loved as much, if not more, than most people here love their Supra's. R.I.P.

I agree. RIP

Lot of anthropomorphising going on in this thread. 'Freedom' is a human, cultural concept and it is mistaken to project that onto animals.

If the enclosure is too small, or there isn't enough variety and stimulation, or the usual social contacts are prevented, or other needs aren't been met - then, fair enough, captivity may be worse. However, if all those conditions are met, captivity shouldn't be any more stressful than living in the wild.

A 'natural life' for most animals is short and unpleasant, cut short by disease, injury, exposure, starvation. If you had given our distant ancestors the choice between living in a large comfortable enclosure or roaming free as mountain spirits in the dangerous great outdoors, I think its unlikely they would have gone for the latter. ANimals are programmed by their genes to be pragmatisits, and so were we until the last few thousand years when culture took over.

If they were mackerel would a crowd pay a lot of money to watch someone swim and "play" with them? Of course they are dangerous, as are racing cars, boxing and sex with strangers. That's why people participate and watch, for the thrill. Not that I condone dogging.... :)

Brilliant :D
